Lecky Road Underpass

This is the scene at the Lecky Road underpass (going up to Barrack Street) in February 2007: above,”SF/RUC scum”, “Kill all cops”, “Vote Peggy O’Hara“, “Israel scum”, with tricoloured supports and light-pole; below, a series of paste-ups to victims of Bloody Sunday (on its 35th anniversary) and others nominated as part of Bluebell Arts’s “Unsung Heroes” project – Willie McKinney (killed on Bloody Sunday), Kevin McElhinney (killed on Bloody Sunday), “Palestinian youth from Balata refugee camp. Despite being denied a homeland, they dare to dream. Nominated by Bluebell Arts”. Here is a gallery of images from the anniversary march (indymedia) with plenty of anti-SF messages on display.

ETA – RIRA

These hand-drawn BRY/RIRA murals are a montage of many traditional republican symbols, such as Celtic FC, the Easter lily, Bobby Sands, an assault rifle, the Tricolour and a crude island of Ireland. Plus support for Basque separatists ETA. “CRF” = “Catholic Reaction Force”?

Unbroken Continuity

Liam Mellows was commander of the Western Division of the Irish Volunteers during the Rising and anti-Treaty Sınn Féın TD executed by firing squad in December 1922. Sınn Féın was founded in 1905 (see previously one | two) but this is an anti-Agreement board.

Next to the Mellows board is South Down PIRA graffiti (seen previously in 2001) and the flags of Palestine and Lebanon. All three images are from the junction of Carnagat Road and Camlough Road in Newry.

Psyops

These images show the political pieces on the back wall of the site of the old Andersonstown RUC barracks at the junction of the Glen Road and Falls Road. Fıan John Dempsey (memorialised elsewhere); Sınn Féın using a quote from Mao; graffiti supporting Palestine and the Basque Country; a hunger strikers memorial; graffiti equating Israel and the Nazis.

Llibertat – Saoırse

The flag and map on the left is the flag of the Catalan Countries (the Starry Plough is in the middle, the Tricolour on the right, with Ireland as a blob). The Catalan Countries include (in Spain) Catalonia, parts of Valencia, and the Balearic islands, plus Andorra, and (in France) the Roussillon region. For a similar pairing (llibertat-saoırse) with portraits of international heroes, see Llibertat (also Llibertat Països Catalans).
