Capitalism can offer our people nothing and yet that’s the main interest of the British in Ireland – Óglach Maıréad Farrell.” Farrell was one of the Gibraltar 3 (along with Sean Savage and Dan McCann), killed by SAS soldiers in 1988. The memorial garden in Beechmount Avenue, Belfast, goes beyond commemoration of IRA volunteers. Moving clockwise: dying volunteer, “local men and women and POWs”, hunger strikers, comhaltaí Shınn Féın, proclamation, na hÓglaıgh, “innocent people from the area”, “the unsung heroes off [sic] this area”, Sands quote.

New Lodge, Carrick Hill and Newington

“Between 1969 and 1988 117 residents from the New Lodge, Carrick Hill and Newington were killed as a direct result of the conflict. 22 of those were killed by state forces. 86 were killed by loyalist paramilitaries. 19 of those who died were IRA volunteers.” Placard on the New Lodge Road.

Cluan Place is a single street in east Belfast separated from (nationalist) Short Strand by a “peace” line. The mural features an unusual combination of Union Flag and Ulster Banner. For a history of Cluan Place, see Out Of The Ashes. “5 people shot – houses burnt – houses bombed. 20 families intimidated out by Sinn Fein/IRA. Still loyalist. No surrender.”

Volunteers From The New Barnsley Area

The New Barnsley memorial garden is greatly expanded over the single plaque from 2005, to include a larger main plaque, a smaller one commemorating early resistance “Sheas sıad le chéıle” [They stood together], and wrought-iron gates with a phoenix and “Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann”.
