Lamentations for the “killed, wounded, missing” among “the west Belfast volunteers who formed in this area”, verse 1:16 in English on the right pillar commemorating the 36th (Ulster) Division – “For these things do I weep/My eyes flow with tears” – and in Irish on the damaged left pillar commemorating the 10th & 16th Irish Divisions – “Seo iad cúis mo chaointe/No [Na?] deora le mo shuile” (the 1981 Bíobla Naofa translation is “Sin an fáth a mbím ag caoi/Agus ag sileadh na súl go fuíoch”).

A tribute to the 4th and 9th battalions of the Royal Irish Rifles “1912-2002 – 90th anniversary” (with the 36th Division emblem in the middle) and (on the right) “S company 1969-1974”. 1974 is the year C company, 1st battalion (west Belfast) UVF was formed.

“Five Cuban patriots unjustly imprisoned in political show trials in Miami in 2001. Join the campaign to release them.” The five were Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González, intelligence agents arrested in 1998 and accused of spying on the US; the Cuban government said they were in the US to infiltrate the Cuban exile community. Their convictions were overturned by a Circuit panel but upheld by the full court (WP).

“4,400 Palestinian political prisoners, 310 administrative detention. No to Israeli administrative detention! Hunger strike!” with portraits of Hanna Shalabi and Khadner Adnan. Adnan went on strike to protest his violent arrest and interrogation, and detention without trial (“administrative detention”); he reached a deal after 66 days (BBC). Shalabi went on hunger strike to protest her detention without trial; she reached a deal and ended the strike after 43 days (The World). Both were alleged to be members of Islamic Jihad.

The sands of time are running out: carbon spewing into the atmosphere from factories (on the left) is melting the ice-caps, leaving polar bears without a place to stand (upper hourglass) and flooding Belfast (lower hourglass), and the Statue Of Liberty too.

County Antrim Memorial

“Honour Ireland’s dead – wear an Easter lily.” This Beechmount Avenue/Ascaıll Ard Na bhFeá mural is a memorial to republicans from County Antrim from 1798 to 1966 – when the ‘County Antrim Memorial’ was raised in Milltown on the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising – and beyond; it is pictured in the lower right, a large cross-shaped monument. Tom Williams (WP), an IRA volunteer who was executed during the Northern Campaign (during the second world war) and is buried in the plot, is mentioned specifically on the headstone in the lower left.

Political Hostage

Owen Paterson (with one “t”) is the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland who revoked Price’s licence last year after she appeared at an Easter rally but those charges have just been dismissed (BBC). This Marian Price (WP) mural on the Whiterock Road was launched on May 13 to protest her continued incarceration. The stencil is in Beechmount Street.

Kathleen Feeney

“In loving memory of Kathleen Feeney, shot dead 14th November 1973, aged 14 years. Erected by her family & friends from the Brandywell & surrounding area.” Feeney was killed during an IRA sniper attack on the British Army in Quarry Street and at the time the IRA denied that Feeney was hit by an IRA bullet. In 2005, however, it released a statement (CAIN) announcing that it had conducted an investigation and was reversing the claim.
