The Ulster Tower at Thiepval, France, is a replica of Helen’s Tower in Clandeboye, around which the 36th (Ulster) Brigade, which formed in August 1914 from the Ulster Volunteers and Young Citizen Volunteers, began their training (see this gallery of images from North Down Museum at BBC-NI). After a year of training in Ireland and England, the Division was deployed to France in September 1915.

In the top corners are two views of the local Scrabo Tower. Produced by muraltec.

To the memory and sacrifice of the brave young men from North Antrim who gave their lives with countless others at the Somme and other battles during the Great War 1914-18, to restore peace in Europe. “From North Antrim To Gettysburg. ‘On this July morning my heart recalls the summer fields of hame, the townland of my mother, the sound and smells of the lower meadow. These memories I carry into battle between the drum beats of my heart.’ John McPherson, Confederate soldier, Gettysburg July 1st 1863. This mural marks the Trans-Atlantic heritage of our ancestors who set out from these fields, shores and townlands to establish a new life, and in doing so, helped create the United States of America.”

Interned By Britain

“Interned by Britain, facilitated by Stormont.” Marian Price was released on May 39th, 2013 (BBC) but it took a while for some IRPWA (web) placards to come down. The first is in Lone Moor Road, Derry. The second – “Support the republican POWs on protest in Maghaberry” – is in Eastway, Derry and was later vandalised (see M09535). The third is in Brompton Park, Ardoyne, Belfast.

“Remember the tragic events surrounding the unlawful execution of IRA volunteers [Vols. Sean Savage, Maıréad Farrell, Dan McCann] in Gibraltar by the SAS on the 6th March 1988, the shooting of Vol. Keven McCracken in the defence of the community, the murderous attack on the Gibraltar funeral by a British sponsored assassin and killing of mourners [John Murray, Thomas McErlean, Vol. Caoımhín Mac Brádaıgh]. I ndíl [sic] chuımhne. Always remembered with pride by the people of the Colin area. Béırıgí [sic] bua.”
