“Unbowed, unbroken.” This is a version of the earlier Éıre/Ireland mural (depicted as a female in the centre of the mural) seen in 2005.  Portraits of 18 local republicans are included, beginning with Charlie Monahan and Murtagh McAstocker. This mural is similar to the earlier one on the shop gable (which had 16 portraits).

The plaque to the left reads “Dedicated to the memory of the volunteers of B company 3rd battalion Belfast brigade Óglaıgh na hÉıreann who died fighting for an Irish socialist republic. Fuaır sıad bás ar son saoırse na hÉıreann.”

For the 90th anniversary of the Easter Rising, the mural shown above was painted on Beechmount Avenue, Belfast (a.k.a. RPG Avenue). The mural reproduces a 1941 stamp designed by Victor Brown showing an armed volunteer outside the GPO. For more information and the postage stamp, see Raising The Flag.

Brendan McNamee – Miriam Daly

Brendan McNamee was shot by the Officials in 1975; Miriam Daly was shot by loyalists in her Andersonstown home. “In death as in life they remain an inspiration to everyone who believes in Irish freedom. Erected by the Irish Republican Socialist Ex-Prisoners Memorial Committee.”

Pray For Us And Erin

“Dedicated to Vols Bobby McCrudden, Mundo O’Rawe, Pearse Jordan. In passing this mural pause a little while, pray for us and erin, then smile.” Ballymurphy mural to three local PIRA volunteers. O’Rawe’s pose (in the centre) perhaps owes something to the poster for the 1996 film Michael Collins. The plaque reads “I ndíl [sic] chuímhne [sic] Oglach [sic] Edward ‘Mundo’ O’Rawe, Oglach [sic] Robert McCrudden, Oglach [sic] Pearse Jordan Who gave their lives for Ireland’s freedom.”

“This mural is dedicated to the memory of those local republican activists [34 portraits of volunteers from “A, D, F foıreannacha, cathlann 3rú, Brıogáıd mBéal Feırste”] who devoted their lives to the cause of Irish freedom. Ar son na c[ú]ıse. Óglaıgh na hÉıreann. Unveiled by Sınn Féın councillors Martin Meehan and Margaret McClenaghan.”

“Many suffer so that some day future generations may live in justice and peace – Bobby Sands MP.”

The plaque on the stone is “Dedicated to those friends and neighbours from Ardoyne, the Bone and Ligoniel whose contribution and support to our struggle was and remains invaluable. Aıthníonn muıd a gcrógacht. Óglaıgh na hÉıreann. Meán Fómhaır 2003.”

Short Strand Roll Of Honour

“I ndılchuımhne ar óglaıgh chomplacht B an trıú cathlan brıogáıd Bhéal Feırste Óglaıgh na hÉıreann a fuaır bás ar son saoırse na hÉıreann and all others who died as a result of British occupation of our country.” Roll of honour for IRA volunteers (up to 1978) in and from east Belfast, beginning with Charlie Monaghan/Monahan who died in 1916 the day before the Rising and who would get a mural in 2006 (and another in the Markets in 2017), as would Sean Martin who died in 1940.

Lives Were Given, Lives Were Taken

“In proud and loving memory [of] republican activists who dedicated their lives to a noble cause”. “To those who come to think and pray remember well the price they paid. Lives were given, for our country to be free, lives were taken, to keep us on our knees. From 1916 to the present day our struggle continues, our enemies the same. But we know, and they know, that one day our country will be united, Gaelic, and free.” The cross in the foreground is dedicated to Louis Scullion, an IRA volunteer from Unity Flats who was shot by the British Army in July 1972.
