Whiterock Road, Belfast by Lucas Quigley. Also new is the plaque naming the wall as “Dorothy Maguire Corner”, after the 19-y-o shot in 1971, a member of Cumann Na mBan.

Patsy O’Hara of the INLA (the IRSP is its political wing) died on hunger strike on May 21st, 1981. This Shaws Road mural was painted for the 25th anniversary of his death. There is a signature of sorts at the bottom: “RSM [Republican Socialist Movement] Andersonstown”.

“Targeted by British Establishment; Executed by Loyalist killer gang.” Solicitor and “human rights activist” Pat Finucane was shot in 1989 at his home in north Belfast by loyalist paramilitaries aided by MI5. Collusion in the killing was admitted in 2011 by then-Prime Minister David Cameron. Ten years after Finucane’s death, Rosemary Nelson was also assassinated. “If you don’t defend human rights lawyers, who will defend human rights? – Rosemary Nelson”. The board in Beechmount Drive was originally black. The plaque was “unveiled by his family Sunday 11th Febraury 2007”.

INLA volunteer Patsy O’Hara was born in Bishop Street, Derry, near the site of this mural and memorial. He went on hunger strike the same day as Raymond McCreesh and outlasted him by nine hours, both dying on May 21st, 1981. “If you strike at, imprison, or kill us, out of our prisons or graves we will still evoke a spirit that will thwart you, and perhaps, raise a force that will destroy you! We defy you! Do your worst! – James Connolly”
