A few words of Irish – “Lamh Dearg Abu” – in a loyalist mural in Glenwood Street, just off the Shankill Road, through strictly it should be “Lámh Dhearg Abú”. “Lámh dhearg” means “red hand”, and this is a Red Hand Commandos’ mural.

The same motto was on the mural that this one replaced, which can be seen at M02433.

The scrolls name ten RHC units, including “North Down” as distinct from “Co. Down”, “South East Antrim” as distinct from “Co Antrim”, and England and Scotland.

The panels of text are two verses from Robert Laurence Binyon’s For The Fallen and some lines from Rudyard Kipling’s Ulster (here given as “Ulster 1912”: “Believe we dare not boast/Believe we dare not fear/We stand to pay the cost/In all that men hold dear”

Somme 1916

A mural from 1st Shankill Somme association (Fb) commemorating the Battle of the Somme, with soldiers running through no-man’s land and the Ulster Tower memorial. With support from the Govan Somme Association, Grapes Bar, Glasgow.

Replaces the Tombo Kinner mural.

On the locally-named “Passchendaele Court” (a.k.a. Conway Walk, off Conway St.).

Winifred Carney Road

The Antrim Road at Carlisle Circus also bears the street-name ‘Winifred Carney Road’, given as part of the ‘Naming Our Streets’ project. Carney’s name was chosen for this location – SIPTU offices – because she was a trade unionist and also because she grew up on Carlisle Circus. The project celebrates 50 historically important Belfast women, seven of whom were honoured in this way (Women’s Resource & Development Agency).

“Praise youth and it will respond – the laughter of our children – the joy of our hearts.” A young Bobby Sands is shown in the front right, part of the Stella Maris soccer squad for 1967; he would later “respond” by becoming an IRA volunteer and hunger striker.

The hunger strikers plaque was previously to the left of the (previous) mural; out of picture is another plaque, to the deceased from the “greater Newington area” – see Out Of The Ashes Of 1798.

People Of The Greater Newington Area

Free Marian Price Now!

“End internment – Free Marian Price”. August 2012 and Marian Price has been moved from Maghaberry to Hydebank (in February – BBC) and the charges against her for her part in the 2011 Easter Rising commemoration in Derry have been dropped (in May – BBC).

On the flats and in Queen’s Parade, New Lodge, north Belfast.

The lettering on the left reads “Join the Republican Network For Unity”, and below everything there is a Bobby Sands quote: “We all know the reason that we are being tortured – because we are political dissidents, POWs, and we won’t bend the knee or conform” (from Thoughts From The Shadows).

Out Of The Ashes Of 1969

The scroll reads “Out of the ashes of 1969” arose the Provisional IRA, but the lineage is a long one and all but one of the organisations, events, and arms depicted here precede 1969: Cumann Na mBan, Na Fıanna Éıreann, Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann, a Celtic shield and sword, a pike (from the 1798 Rebellion), a Thompson gun, the Tricolour; only the assault rifle is modern and perhaps also is meant to indicate the Provisionals, Belfast Brigade. “Fuaır sıad bás as son saoırse na hÉıreann.” 

The 21 portraits are of Paddy McManus, Seamus McCusker, Colm Mulgrew (SF), Francis Liggett, Brian Fox, John Kelly, Tony Campbell, Robert Allsopp, Louis Scullion, Billy Reid, Danny O’Hagan, Michael Kane, Sean McIllvenna [sic], Jim O’Neill, Rosemary Blakely [sic], Martin McDonagh, Michael P Neill, Gerard Crossan, James McCann, James Sloan, Dan McCann.

At the time of the launch (2012-03) the portraits were not in place – see X00857. Replaces Laochra Na nGael.
