Hand-painted “BRY” [Bogside Republican Youth], “No RUC” and “Support our POWs” boards but also computer-designed and -printed stickers in the Bogside, Derry. The boards are probably local productions, while the stickers probably come from the same German store responsible for the anti-fascist, “Irish republican solidarity” and “Good night, loyalist pride” stickers (see Northern Ireland World). The Facebook sticker is presumably for the store or for antifa; as far as we know, BRY has never had a Facebook page or internet presence; the web address “www.irishrepublicansolidarity.info/” is defunct.

Two Snakes Too Many

“End internment”. St Patrick is supposed to have driven all of the snakes out of Ireland, but the work is never done. The “snakes” in question are Theresa Villiers (minister for Northern Ireland in the current Conservative government) and David Ford, leader of the Alliance Party and minister for Justice in Stormont. The issue in question is (probably) the denial of compassionate parole for Marian Price (Oireachtas); “Prisons Crisis Group” published a pamphlet ‘Free Marian Price’ (Socialist Worker).

Bear In Mind These Dead

For the anniversary of his death, a poster of Volunteer Eamonn Lafferty is placed alongside the ogham stone and dolmen to the 1st battalion, Derry Brigade, IRA. Lafferty was killed on August 18th, 1971 – there are both a mural and a headstone to his memory in Kildrum Gardens.

Justice For Tommy McAuley

Proprietor of the Mill Diner on the Crumlin Road Tommy McAuley was shot by the UVF in 1987 in retaliation for the Enniskillen bombing. His case was examined by the Historical Enquiries Team (HET) who reported (in 2011) that the police did not question suspects identified by witnesses and the family lobbied the ombudsman to reopen the case (U.tv). The flowers and poster are on the front of the closed diner.

The Balmoral Review

“100 years – 1912-20212 – the Balmoral Review”. Debate on the third Home Rule bill long preceded its formal introduction on April 11th. Winston Churchill and others travelled to Belfast in February to speak in its favour (see RIC At Celtic Park) and on April 9th (Easter Tuesday) 100,000 unionists rallied in Balmoral show grounds for review by Bonar Law, the head of the Conservative party – here is a postcard of the Wicklow contingent. (For more photographs, see Balmoral Review Review.) The 2012 commemoration drew about 10,000 people to Ormeau Park (Slugger).

The hoarding is in Lawnbrook Avenue, the small boards are in Conway Street, Belfast.

101 Years International Women’s Day

Room 101 was a torture chamber in the Ministry of Love in George Orwell’s novel 1984. For women, the trials include racism, poverty, violence, injustice, sexism, trafficking. On the front side are posters protesting Marian Price‘s 295 days in isolation.

Clonoe Martyrs

“East Tyrone remembers the “Clonoe Martyrs” – four IRA volunteers who were killed by the SAS after attacking Coalisland RUC station with a machine gun mounted on the back of a lorry on February 16th, 1992 as they were switching from the attack vehicles to getaway cars in Clonoe (WP).
