McGerrigan – Hughes

“1973-2013” Jake McGerrigan and Tony Hughes of the OIRA were both shot and killed by British forces in the Windmill Hill area of Armagh in a 48-hour period spanning April 7th and 9th, 1973. (Lost Lives #791 incorrectly gives March 7th for McGerrigan.) The board shown above was mounted in Navan Street for the 40th anniversary of their deaths, in 2013. The larger portraits on either side are of McGerrigan and Hughes; between them are (left) Peadar McElvanna, Roddy Carroll, Gerard Mallon, Martin Corrigan, (middle) Peter Corrigan, (right) Tony McClelland, Seamus Grew, Sean McIlvanna [McIlvenna], Dessie Grew.

There is an individual plaque to Hughes at the spot where he was shot, at the bottom of the second image below a board listing the same names (seen previously in 2012). “Thug sıad a raıbh acú [sic] ar son saoırse na hEırınn [sic].” “From death springs life and from the graves of patriots springs a great nation. [from Pearse’s oration at O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral].” There is stone to both McGerrigan and Hughes in the same alley (see McGerrigan – Hughes); there is also a stone to McGerrigan in Windmill Avenue.

Many Suffer

This is an end-of-life image – or perhaps a preparation-for-repainting image – of the mural at the corner of Ardoyne Avenue. The mural is still is reasonable shape (compared to 2008) but the 34 medallions with portraits to local volunteers and activists have been removed.

Putting Ireland First

“Sınn Féın – putting Ireland first / Éıre chun cınn. Vótáıl Mary McConville, Jim McVeigh, toghcheantar na Cuırte / Court”. Local elections will be held on May 22nd, for the newly amalgamated councils (11 rather than 26); the Court district has also changed somewhat – it now includes the [CNR] areas of Clonard and Falls as well as [PUL] Ballygomartin, Forth River, Shankill, and Woodvale (WP).

“Belfast Easter Commemoration 1916 – Sunday 20th April. Assemble Beechmount Ave 1pm, parade leave 1.30 pm sharp. Speaker: Martina Anderson MEP. Honour Ireland’s patriot dead, wear an Easter lily. Cumann Uaıgheann[a] Na Laochra Gael – National Graves Association”

Easter Sunday Commemoration March

“Easter Sunday commemoration march. Assemble 2.00 pm Westland Street. Tírghrá.” The sign is the same as in 2013 (M09214), which was a modified version of the 2011 board (M06631).

“Tírghrá” [patriotism] is perhaps a reference to the list (and profiles) of IRA dead.

1ú Caṫlán Oırṫear Tıreoın Óglaıġ Na hÉıreann

1ú Caṫlán Oırṫear Tıreoın Óglaıġ Na hÉıreann [more typically “Tír Eoghaın”; 1st battalion east Tyrone IRA]

“Beannaımıs spıorad do-ċlaoıte na laoċra atá ına luı ıns na huıgheanna seo.” [We bless the indomitable spirit of the heroes who are buried in these graves.] “do-ċlaoıte” appears to be a Connacht form of “do-ċloíte”, meaning “indomitable”, “indefatigable” (Focaıl Fholaıthe).

The volunteers named on the various stones are Patrick Kelly, Patrick Vincent, Kevin Murray, Patrick Quinn, Patrick Carty, Seán Loughan, Patrick McDonald.

Kelly was killed in the Loughgall ambush – see the Loch gCál/Loughgall tribute mural in west Belfast (also a smaller mural in north Belfast).

Vincent was the driver of the lorry in the Clonoe Ambush.

Murray and McDonald were “killed in action” in 1974 (Fb).

Quinn was “killed in action” in 1973, along with Daniel McAnallen (Fb).

Loughan and Carty were “killed in action”, along with Dermot Crowley, in June 1973 (An Phoblacht).

The flat stone with the phoenix reads: “Romantic Ireland never dies!/O’Leary lies in fertile ground./And songs and spears throughout the years/Rise up where patriot graves are found.”

St Malachy’s churchyard, Coalisland Road, Edendork.

Easter Commemorations

Top is a 1916 Societies board (in Rossville Street) announcing a commemoration for Richard Quigley on Easter Saturday; below is a 32 County Sovereignty Movement board (in Eastway) for an Easter Rising commemoration on Easter Monday.

Richie Quigley died on “active service” on April 21st, 1984 when he was hit by debris from a van-bomb that exploded prematurely (UPI). 2014 is the thirtieth anniversary of his death.

Mothers Of The Revolution

This painted board is by members of the Youth First (web) group in the Bogside. In the image above, a young mother sporting both a nappy pin and an Easter lily tends to her infant child while casting a look back at Free Derry corner, the silhouettes of marchers, and washing on a line.
