Let Them Home

This graffiti on the hoardings around the building-site at the top of Woodvale Road, at the junction with Twaddell Avenue, where each night Orange bands march up to the police line, attempting to march past the Ardoyne shops and finish a parade from the Twelfth (of July) 2013.

A camp was established on the site on Twaddell Avenue with signs using the language of “civil rights” and “equality”: “Established to campaign for Equality. Civil Rights. Welcome to all who support the campaign. The two main objectives are to see the Ligoniel lodges, bands and supporters complete their 12th july parade; to have the current parades commission removed. Please note the camp and the surrounding area is an alcohol free zone. All music must finish by 9 p.m. and the wishes of the local residents fully respected. Thank you for your support. United we stand – divided we fall.”

What Has Changed?

These anti-Agreement graffiti are in Foylehill (mostly Kildrum Gardens and Southway): “Smash Maghaberry”, “IRPWA”, “RUC not welcome in Foylehill”, “Victory to the POWs”, “End British internment”, Tıocfaıdh ár lá”.

The phrase “We only have to be lucky once” is from the IRA statement on the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing (WP).

The final piece dates back to 2009: “Internment 71-09. What has changed? Brits out, not sell out.”

Welcome To LVF-Land

The fairy-tale covering painted over an LVF “North Belfast Rat Pack” mural is fading away to reveal the previous work. For the original LVF mural, see D01199.

The graffiti on the wall – Welcome to LVF Land – has itself been scored out, and there is also a piece of anti-LVF graffiti in the street.

Child Killers

Without names, on July 29th:

Whitewashing of the previous ‘Sarcoma yellow’, July 28th:

Four children from the Baker (or: Bakr) clan run from an Israeli rocket bearing the Star of David, leaving behind their football on the beach at the port of Gaza. Ismael Mohamed Bakr (9), Ahed Atef Bakr (10), Zakaria Ahed Bakr (10), and Mohamed Ramez Bakr (11) all died; three other children and one adult were wounded. (For more background, see Stad An Slad/Stop The Slaughter).

The two versions shown here – from July 29th and August 1st – differ only in the later inclusion of the names and ages of the children along the bottom.

‘Free Derry Corner’ has its own Visual History page | Click here for other Gaza-related entries.
