Covenants Without Swords Are Only Words

“Covenants without swords are only words” is a slight emendation of a line from Chapter 17 of Thomas Hobbes’s The Leviathan: “And covenants, without the sword, are but words and of no strength to secure a man at all.” 

It is applied here to the 1912 Ulster Covenant being backed up by the 1914 gun-running. Edward Carson is shown acknowledging the cheers of the Ulster Volunteers, who have been drilling at Glencairn (as seen in this Shankill mural).

Oppose British Political Policing

A 32-County Sovereignty Movement (web) tarp reading “Oppose British political policing” has been added below and partly on top of some lettering reading “RIC – RUC – PSNI”, “RUC -> Collusion covered up by PSNI” on a whitewashed panel that sat empty for weeks. It would seem that the original plans for this piece did not materialise and the tarp is a substitute.

Resistance

The three images employed here are: a scene from Grafton Street in the Battle Of Dublin in the civil war (1922) (irishhistory.blogspot.com), PIRA volunteers on patrol in 1987 (top right), and (bottom left) a home-made rocket-launcher used in a 2014 attack on police (see, e.g. irishmirror.ie).

Set The Truth Free

“Set The Truth Free” was the name of a campaign for justice and transparency concerning Bloody Sunday (see An Phoblacht | Pierce Youtube | Bell (2010)) but the numbers cited on this banner – “3,600 dead, 40,000 injured” – refer to the Troubles as a whole.

Rhythm Of Time

“Dedicated to all republican prisoners past and present.” Bobby Sands’s poem The Rhythm Of Time, published in 1981 as part of Prison Poems, is printed in full along with images of Long Kesh and other prisons in which republican prisoners were held.

The tarp was launched 2014-08-10, to coincide with the anniversary of the introduction of interment in 1971 (see e.g. this BBC news report).

Let No Man Pull You So Low As To Hate Him

In a sermon on November 4th, 1956 (and repeated on other occasions), Martin Luther King, Jr. imagined a letter from Paul to the Christians of America, expressing concern for spiritual life in a capitalist society and appealing for desegregation of society using non-violent methods – “the weapon of love” – keeping in mind “that you are merely seeking justice for him as well as yourself”.
