Liggett & Brady

IRA volunteer Francis Liggett was shot by the British Army in January 1973 as he attempted to rob the Royal. One of the images of Gerry Adams in paramilitary beret comes from Liggett’s funeral. Paddy Brady was a Sınn Féın activist shot in 1984 at his work by the UFF (Sutton). Both were from the St James’s area of west Belfast. Their portraits are on either side of Éıre personified. They are also included in the ‘Roll of Honour’ in the memorial garden below them. The verses are from Bobby Sands’s poem Weeping Winds.

Loyalist Monarch

Graffiti on the electrical boxes near the Broadway roundabout, marking the western edge of the (PUL) Village: “Loyalist Monarch [Street]”, “FTIBA“, “KAT” [Kill all Taigs [Catholics]], “ATAT” [All Taigs are targets], “The young, the brave, the fearless – YCV”, “Village UVF”.

In the background is the 2010 Monarch bonfire.

To Those Who Gave Their All For The Great War

William Frederick McFadzean of the 14th (Young Citizens) battalion Royal Irish Rifles was awarded the Victoria Cross for throwing himself on a box of grenades that had fallen into the trench during the Battle Of The Somme, July 1st, 1916. The figure on the left is Edward Carson. The plaque reads “Sydenham roll of honour to those who gave their lives in the Great War and to those who haven’t been traced but are known unto God.”

UDA South Belfast Brigade

This UDA memorial garden is in Lemberg Street, at the top of (south Belfast) Roden Streeet. The plaque to John McMichael and eleven others would later be moved to Sandy Row. The stone on the right reads “In memory of fallen comrades south Belfast brigade”.

UVF North Down Brigade

This mural mixes the Ulster Volunteers who fought at the Somme, Ypres, Arras, Thiepval, St Quentin, Grandcourt, Messines, Fricourt with local volunteers from the modern-day UVF: William Hannagan, William Lightbody, Stephen Campbell, Stuart Allan, Keith McKinstry, Eddie Moreland, Michael McKeague, Thomas O’Brien, Jim Moore, David Stirling.

Blair “Paddy” Mayne

Robert Blair “Paddy” Mayne was a rugby player, boxer, golfer, and solicitor, and in WWII a commando and one of the first members of the SAS (Special Air Service), participating in raids behind enemy lines in Egypt and Libya (depicted in the board above), and later, as SAS commander, in France, Belgium and other countries. His many decorations, including the DSO (four times) and French Croix De Guerre and Legion D’Honneur, are pictured below. His WP page includes an explanation of the ribbon bars.

Mayne was born in Newtownards and returned there at the end of the war. His statue stands in the town’s Conway Square and this board can be found in Queen Street.
