“Hillhall battalion, Lisburn. In memory Andrew Mason.”

The two small plaques are to Glen [Glenn] Clarke and “In memory of Andrew Mason (Macey) murdered 19th April 1987. Always remembered by his comrades of ‘C’ Coy – ‘B’ Battalion South Belfast Brigade UDA. Quis separabit.”

The large stone is to John McMichael, Raymond Smallwood[s], Jim Guiney, shot and killed by the INLA in Dunmurry, and Mason. “Sons of Ulster do not be anxious for we will never forget you as long as the sun shines and the wind blows and the rain falls and the rivers of Ulster flow to the sea. Always remembered by volunteers from Hillhall C Company.”

John “Grugg” Gregg

“South East Antrim Brigade UFF. In proud memory of Brig. John “Grugg” Gregg and all fallen comrades. 4th Batt. A B C Coys. Lest we forget.” Gregg is known for the attempted killing of Gerry Adams and for being killed on the orders of Johnny Adair, which led to the expulsion of Adair’s company from the lower Shankill.

The Unsung Heroes

“In proud and loving memory of all local volunteers, prisoners of war, republican activists and the unsung heroes who died of natural causes having served the cause of Irish republicanism [“sean óglach” on the individual plaques]. Together in unity you formed a bond which gave true meaning to the undefeated risen people. Your deeds of bravery and resistance will never be forgotten by the people of greater St. James’s. In your honour the quest for Irish freedom continues.”

With the famous “our steps will be onward” quote from Máıre Drumm at an anti-internment rally in Dunville Park on 10th August, 1975 (RN).

UVF North Down Brigade

This mural mixes the Ulster Volunteers who fought at the Somme, Ypres, Arras, Thiepval, St Quentin, Grandcourt, Messines, Fricourt with local volunteers from the modern-day UVF: William Hannagan, William Lightbody, Stephen Campbell, Stuart Allan, Keith McKinstry, Eddie Moreland, Michael McKeague, Thomas O’Brien, Jim Moore, David Stirling.

Monkstown 1st Batt UDA

This is a new version of the Monkstown UDA 1st battalion mural on Devenish Drive. The previous showed volunteers on manoeuvres in front of Three Mile Water aqueduct in the top portion. This new mural shows graveside volunteers with assault rifles point down, mourning William Hobbs and James Boyd McClurg. The two died from a premature bomb explosion on May 10th, 1977, across the road from the mural in Seagoe Gardens; Hobbs died immediately, McClurg of his injuries a few weeks later. “All gave some, some gave all.”

“This monument was erected by the republican people of greater Ballymurphy in proud and loving memory of all those volunteers from the area who gave their lives in the fight for Irish freedom.” Volunteers McParland, Kane, Maguire, Meehan, Sloan, McCormick, Campbell, Magee, Dougal, McCrudden, Clarke, Parker, Quigleey, Mulholland, O’Rawe, McGartland, Mulvenna, Pettigrew, Bryson, Teer, Stone, McGrillen, Tolan, McWilliams, Delaney, O’Neill, Jordan, Doyle, McCracken, McGeown. “Unveiled by Gerry Adams 12th May 1985. I ndıl cuımhne [chuımhne] i gcónaí ag na poblachtánaıgh ón cheantar Barr Cluanaí. Also in memory of the civilians who died at the hands of the British Army, RUC, UDR, and loyalist extremists.” The launch date of 1985 refers to the plaque’s former location in Glenalina Road (seen in 2001 and 2002).

Brigadier Billy Wright

“In memory of [LVF] Brigadier Billy Wright murdered 27th December 1997 by the NIO aided by republican scum. Remembered proudly by your comrades in Ulster – Scotland – England. Lead the way.” Wright was killed in the Maze by three INLA inmates.
