End The Siege On Gaza

“The Market community supports Palestine – End the siege on Gaza – Free Palestine”. Tears of blood flow from a boy’s face, shrouded by a Palestinian flag and behind barbed wire. Along the bottom, in red lettering, is a quote from Malcolm X’s autobiography: “If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the [people who are being] oppressed and loving the oppressor [the people who are doing the oppressing].”

The mural was launched on 2014-07-29.

We Deliver British Rule

Here is a gallery of anti-Agreement stencils and hand-painted boards in Newry. The primary concern is the treatment of prisoners in Maghaberry and elsewhere – “Republicans against internment”, “Stop the strip searches in Maghaberry”, “Smash Maghaberry”, “End British torture in Maghaberry”, “Restore political status” – followed by anger at Sınn Féın for its collusion with the organs of Westminster – “Sinn Féin – we deliver British rule” and “Provo puppets still administering British rule”.

An Eochaır

This eochaır/key replaces a plough-in-the-stars on the OIRA ex-prisoners support centre on the Falls Road at Clondara Terrace, seen in Official Republican Movement. The centre perhaps takes its name from the newspaper from the 1970s that was composed of articles written by prisoners and smuggled out of Long Kesh. Here is issue #3, from September, 1973.

Australian Aid For Ireland

This Conway Street mural, outside the mill and the republican museum, features banners of two Australian republican support-groups, with supporters holding banners reading “Australian Aid for Ireland QLD [Queensland] Branch [Fb] – The Spirit of Freedom” and “The Casement Support Group – Saoirse Melbourne”.

Interned By Britain

“Interned by Britain, facilitated by Stormont.” Marian Price was released on May 39th, 2013 (BBC) but it took a while for some IRPWA (web) placards to come down. The first is in Lone Moor Road, Derry. The second – “Support the republican POWs on protest in Maghaberry” – is in Eastway, Derry and was later vandalised (see M09535). The third is in Brompton Park, Ardoyne, Belfast.

See previously: Free Marian Price (2011) and Free Marian Price Now (2012). The other portrait in the final image is Martin Corey – see e.g. 38 Days.

McDonnell Street

On adjacent gables in McDonnell Street (strictly, Osman Street), Belfast, plaques to Kieran Nugent and Maıréad Farrell and to Joe McDonnell.

“Kieran Nugent 1857-2001, Maıréad Farrell 1957-1988. In memory of two heroic Republicans from the Falls area who defied Britain’s criminalisation policy in the H Blocks and Armagh Jail, ‘I’ll wear no convicts uniform nor meekly serve my time.'”

“Dedicated to the memory of Vol. Joe McDonnell born here in Slate Street 14th September 1950 and who died after 61 days on Hunger Strike in the H Blocks of Long Kesh 8th July 1981. ‘A mother kneels in silent prayer, a flower clasped to her breast, she lays it on the lonely grave, where her fallen son now rests. No tears blur her deep blue eyes, they shine with loving pride, she knows he fought for freedom, for liberty he died.’ Go ndéanfaıdh Dia trócaıre ar a anam.”

“McDonnell Street” is the original name of the street and presumably not connected to Joe McDonnell or his predecessors; Slate Street is now Osman Street.

They Cannot Break Our Spirit

“‘They cannot or never will break our spirit …’ – Bobby Sands. [A paraphrasing of a line from day 6 of Sands’s hunger strike diary.] ‘Tiocfaidh ár lá’.”

The back of the Springhill memorial garden is decorated for the 30th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike in which ten republican prisoners died in the H-Blocks.

Political Internees

“Free Marian Price – political internee.” “Release Martin Corey now!”

For Price, see Free Marian Price. Martin Corey was returned to prison in 2010 and a 2011 commission ruled that he was a member of the CIRA (WPBelfast Telegraph).

[An appeal – on the grounds that evidence had been withheld – was rejected in December, 2012.]
