Freedom Corner 2015

The murals along east Belfast’s “Freedom Corner” (on the Newtownards Road) were repainted over the course of several months in 2015. These images are from a variety of dates in July and August; the ‘red hand’ piece is incomplete – for the finished work, see The Strangest Victory In All History.

The new pieces reproduce the previous ones in terms of theme: UFF/Young Newton at the ends, with the Past (Specials and UDR) and Present Defenders (UDA) in the middle – compare with the 2009 entries Freedom Corner | Ulster’s Present Day Defenders | Young Newton.

This board at the junction of the Falls and Glen roads (on the site of the former Andersonstown RUC station) commemorates the death of Pat Finucane (on February 12th, 1989), alleging collusion between the MI5, the UDA, the UDR, and the RUC, and asking for an inquiry.

These two plaques have been mounted on the curved brick wall at the junction of Woodburn Road and Woodburn Avenue, Carrickfergus.

“To honour the men and women who served in the ranks of the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC [Conspicuous Gallantry Cross]. We will remember them.”

“In memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country and are still doing so.”

Comber Loyalists

“Comber loyalists support Union Flag at city hall.” – that is, the permanent flying of the Union Flag at Belfast city hall. High Street.

Old UVF nail-up in De Wind Drive.

“Comber Orange and Protestant hall. Erected A.D. 1875” and “Comber Orange Hall 2010” in Railway Street.

“To the glory of God and in memory of those members of Ulster’s security forces from Comber and district who gave their lives in defence of their country. Fidelis atque fortis [faithful and also strong]. Erected in 1998.” With the names of one UDR soldier and four RUC policemen. Killinchy Street.

Milltown Arch

This is the arch in Milltown Street, Dungannon. The panels show (left) William, Prince Of Orange and (right) the B-Special and UDR on either side of an Ulster Banner in the shape of Northern Ireland, and, (left) Milltown Arch Committee, Dungannon, and (right) the surnames of the thirteen apprentice boys who shut the gates of Derry against the forces of James II in 1688.

Lisburn UDR Memorial

“In memory of the men and women who served in the ranks of the Ulster Defence Regiment 1970-1992”. The statue is by sculptor John Sherlock and was unveiled on June 17th, 2011 (NI World).
