Leila Khaled

Palestinian icon Leila Khaled, who took part in aeroplane hijackings in 1969 and 1970, is featured in this new mural pro-Gaza mural in Hugo Street. The central portrait is a replication of a famous photo by Eddie Adams (WP), taken after her first skyjacking; she then underwent plastic surgery to disguise her identity prior to the 1970 attempt (WP).

Khaled is also featured in the pro-Gaza mural in McQuillan Street: Oppression Breeds Resistance

This mural replaces the right-hand side of Think Independently, Vote Independently.

On the left is an éirígí stencil calling for “Acht Na Gaeılge Anoıs!!!” – “An Irish Language Act Now!!!” The Belfast Telegraph reports that an Irish language bill will be published in the near future, though the DUP have already rejected such an Act. (For more background and discussion see Brian Walker’s post on Slugger.)

In the middle remains JFTC2.

Standing Together

Here are two Sınn Féın boards on contemporary social issues, at the old Andersonstown RUC barracks. First is “Stand together against racism”; second is support for an Irish Language Act “Sınn Féın ag tacú le Lá Dearg Na Gaeılge, 12 Aıbreán – ag teacht le chéıle ag An Chultúrlann, Bóthar na bhFál, Béal Feırste, 2.00 in.”

Léana An Dúın Unbowed Unbroken

“Cuımhnímıs [we remember].” The mural to the “patriot dead” of Lenadoon who died for the freedom (“saoırse”) of Ireland has been repainted.

The design and central figure remain as before, but the tricoloured border is new, as are the photographic portraits of nine local IRA volunteers in the apex. On the scrolls to each side, their names are given as (left) Tony Henderson, John Finucane, Tony Jordan, Brendan O’Callaghan, Joe McDonnell, (right) Laura Crawford, Maıréad Farrell, Patricia Black, Bridie Quinn.

The dedication plaque is from the launch of the 2009 version of the mural; it was originally painted in 1996 (seen here in 2002 with all of the (painted) portraits missing and c. 1999 with three of the nine portraits).

Putting Ireland First

“Sınn Féın – putting Ireland first / Éıre chun cınn. Vótáıl Mary McConville, Jim McVeigh, toghcheantar na Cuırte / Court”. Local elections will be held on May 22nd, for the newly amalgamated councils (11 rather than 26); the Court district has also changed somewhat – it now includes the [CNR] areas of Clonard and Falls as well as [PUL] Ballygomartin, Forth River, Shankill, and Woodvale (WP).

“Belfast Easter Commemoration 1916 – Sunday 20th April. Assemble Beechmount Ave 1pm, parade leave 1.30 pm sharp. Speaker: Martina Anderson MEP. Honour Ireland’s patriot dead, wear an Easter lily. Cumann Uaıgheann[a] Na Laochra Gael – National Graves Association”

1ú Caṫlán Oırṫear Tıreoın Óglaıġ Na hÉıreann

1ú Caṫlán Oırṫear Tıreoın Óglaıġ Na hÉıreann [more typically “Tír Eoghaın”; 1st battalion east Tyrone IRA]

“Beannaımıs spıorad do-ċlaoıte na laoċra atá ına luı ıns na huıgheanna seo.” [We bless the indomitable spirit of the heroes who are buried in these graves.] “do-ċlaoıte” appears to be a Connacht form of “do-ċloíte”, meaning “indomitable”, “indefatigable” (Focaıl Fholaıthe).

The volunteers named on the various stones are Patrick Kelly, Patrick Vincent, Kevin Murray, Patrick Quinn, Patrick Carty, Seán Loughan, Patrick McDonald.

Kelly was killed in the Loughgall ambush – see the Loch gCál/Loughgall tribute mural in west Belfast (also a smaller mural in north Belfast).

Vincent was the driver of the lorry in the Clonoe Ambush.

Murray and McDonald were “killed in action” in 1974 (Fb).

Quinn was “killed in action” in 1973, along with Daniel McAnallen (Fb).

Loughan and Carty were “killed in action”, along with Dermot Crowley, in June 1973 (An Phoblacht).

The flat stone with the phoenix reads: “Romantic Ireland never dies!/O’Leary lies in fertile ground./And songs and spears throughout the years/Rise up where patriot graves are found.”

Think Independently, Vote Independent

Electioneering is under way in Northern Ireland, ahead of the local and European parliament elections on May 22nd.

“Vótáıl Éırígí #1 Pádraıc Mac Coıtır, Máıre Drumm”. This “Máıre Drumm” is the daughter of Sınn Féın vice-president and 1976 RHC victim Máıre Drumm.

“Think Independently, Vote Independent #VoteMulholland1 Cıarán Mulholland. Neamhspleách/Independent candidate for the Black Mountain ward. The political parties have failed the people of west Belfast. Have your say and change things on the 22nd of May #VoteMulholland1”. Mulholland is an independent (socialist).

25 Years On & No Truth

This board at the junction of the Falls and Glen roads (on the site of the former Andersonstown RUC station) commemorates the death of Pat Finucane (on February 12th, 1989), alleging collusion between the MI5, the UDA, the UDR, and the RUC, and asking for an inquiry.

“25 years on & no truth. Why no public inquiry? Time for justice, time for truth!”
