This is a 2015 repainting of a 2001 mural in Glenwood. The ten deceased hunger-strikers of 1981 are listed in the bottom right: Bobby Sands, Francis Hughes, Raymond McCreesh, Patsy O’Hara, Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty, Tom McElwee, Mickey Devine. In the main panel, a lark in barbed wire flies over the H-blocks of Long Kesh and a funeral volley being fired over a Tricolour-draped coffin.
The South Belfast UDA/UFF commander John McMichael (1948-1987) was killed by an IRA car bomb. In addition to organising a team of assassins in the 70s and 80s, he founded a Political Research Group and wrote two documents proposing an independent Northern Ireland, 1979’s Beyond the Religious Divide and 1987’s Common Sense (available at CAIN), promoting the philosophy of ‘Ulster nationalism’. The quote on the board comes from the end of the Introduction to Common Sense:
“There is no section of this divided Ulster community which is totally innocent or indeed totally guilty, totally right or totally wrong. We all share the responsibility for creating the situation, either by deed or by acquiescence. Therefore we must share the responsibility for finding a settlement and then share the responsibility of maintaining good government.”

The Smallwoods plaque is the same but the trio of boards is new, as compared to 2010.
This small board is not far from the upper entrance to Old Warren in Lisburn. There’s no trace on-line of a ‘Moira Road Young Loyalists’. So, it might have been painted by an individual or family along the road. Neither the old UDA A Coy or B Coy boards mention a youth division.
The arch is outside the Masonic Hall in Lisburn Road, Hillsborough. Along the top are Queen Elizabeth II, King Billy, and Prince Philip. On the sides are a list of the 11 lodges that make up the Hillsborough District (No. 19) (Fb).
This is the 2012 instantiation of a tradition on the Twinbrook shops of marking the anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike (though portraits of Frank Stagg and Michael Gaughan are included). The tradition began in 2006 with the 25th anniversary | 27th anniversary | 29th anniversary | 30th anniversary.
This is an updated version of the Gibraltar 3 mural in Twinbrook. The quote from Farrell (see the 2008 version) has fallen off and been replaced with the words “murdered in Gibraltar by British crown forces.”

Local IRA volunteers are commemorated in multiple stones in the Twinbrook memorial garden. On the main wall – which is a new addition – are listed Sean Keenan, Michael Ferguson, Lily Campbell, Mary Keenan, Eddie Keenan, Mary McKee, Hugh McKee. On the obelisk on the left (see previously Twinbrook & Poleglass IRA) are Gerard Fennell, John Rooney, Bobby Sands, Frankie Ryan. On the stone to the right – which was previously outside the railings (see M03008) – are the twelve deceased Troubles-era hunger strikers.

Bobby Sands grew up and went to school in Rathcoole but in 1972, when he was eighteen, the family home was attacked. They moved to Twinbrook, where Sands joined the IRA (Bobby Sands Trust | WP). A nearby installation on the footpath claims that Twinbrook is the “Home Of Bobby Sands“.
This mosaic is near the Twinbrook home, on the same wall that was the site of the Carol-Ann Kelly mural. Kelly was killed two weeks after Sands’s death.
“Freedom Of Speech” was the name given to a piece that the Bogside Artists did during a stay at Hanover College in November 2010, during a tour of the USA. In that piece, the mouth was closed with plain red tape (Hanover) but for this local version, the mouth is closed with tape that combines the Union Flag with green and orange strands.
As the second image shows, the piece did not last long when put outside – the difference in date between the two images is four days.
