West Tyrone Command

Updated version of the monument to West Tyrone Command (seen in 2005) – perhaps with new fencing. A modern volunteer stands on the left, Cú Chulaınn on the right. “In proud memory of Vol. Charles Breslin age 20, Vol. Michael Devine age 22, Vol. David Devine age 16. West Tyrone command, Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann. Killed by crown forces near this spot 23 Feb. 1985.” The three were killed in an alleged shoot-to-kill incident. Obituaries in An Phoblacht.

“I gcomóradh na staılceoırí ocraıs a fuaır bás ı mBloıc-H na Céıse Fada sa bhlıaın 1981 agus ı ndıl chuımhne ar ár cróga go léır a thug a raıbh acu ar staılc ocraıs ın aghaıdh ımpırıúlachas na Breataıne ın Éırınn. This memorial stone is erected to commemorate the deaths of 10 republican volunteers who died in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh prison in the cause of Irish freedom. Their supreme sacrifice changed the course of Irish history forever. Their suffering and subsequent deaths showed the inhumane barbarity of a British government in its attempts to deny our people their liberty and rights as a free nation.”

For Irish Freedom In The West Tyrone Area

“In proud and loving memory of all those who gave their lives for Irish freedom in the West Tyrone area”. “Go luí cré ársa Thír Eoghaın go héadrom ar uıgheanna ár laochraí uaısle.” [May the ancient Tyrone clay lie lightly on the graves of our noble warriors.] Michael Devine, Eugene Devlin, Gerald McGlynn, Danny McCauley, Jim McGinn, Peter McElchar, Jim McAleer, Seamus Harvey, Charles Breslin, Tobias Molloy, Neil Lafferty, Patrick Shanaghan, Patrick Cannon, Davide Devine, Joseph Connolly, Damian Brolly. They Paid The Ultimate Sacrifice

“This plaque is dedicated to the memory of Lt. Col. Trevor King died 9th July 1994, Major Wm (Frenchie) Marchant died 28th April 1987, Davy Hamilton died 17th June 1994. These brave men were killed near this spot by the enemies of Ulster. No sacrifice is too great for one’s country. They paid the ultimate sacrifice. ‘They shall grow not old/as we that are left grow old/Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn/At the going down of the sun and in the morning/We will remember them.'” The plaque is old (see They Paid The Ultimate Sacrifice) but the mural is new. All three men – Marchant, King, Hamilton (and Craig) – were shot near the mural/plaque in Spier’s Place – for information, see Ordinary People, Extraordinary Roles.

The People’s Army

The regiments of the Ulster Volunteers were based on the electoral map (History Ireland), and hence they were North, South, East, and West, despite the fact that this led to uneven numbers of battalions in the regiments.
