Gibraltar 25th Anniversary

The events of March 1988 are remembered 25 years on: the IRA’s Seán Savage, Daniel McCann, Mairéad Farrell were killed by the SAS in Gibraltar on March 6th; Kevin McCracken (IRA) was killed by British solders in Turf Lodge on the night of March 14th, after the corpses had returned to Belfast; John Murray, Thomas McErlean, and Caoimhín Mac Brádaigh (IRA) were killed by Michael Stone on March 16th in Milltown cemetery at the burial of the three. (Two British soldiers, Derek Wood and David Howes, were killed at Mac Brádaigh’s funeral procession on March 19th.)

Events include a plaque to “women in struggle” in the Roddy’s and a murals in Twinbrook (X02322 | M09378) and on the “International Wall” Divis Street (X00979).

Free The Cuban 5

“Bring them home – free the Cuban 5”. Free Derry Corner flies the Cuban flag in support of the “Cuban 5”. The five were Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González, intelligence agents arrested in 1998 and accused of spying on the US; the Cuban government said they were in the US to infiltrate the Cuban exile community. Their convictions were overturned by a Circuit panel but upheld by the full court (WP).

Solidarity POWs

This mural expresses solidarity between Irish republican and Palestinian prisoners of war. It was painted by Carlos Latuff, a Brazilian political cartoonist, in collaboration with a local artist. There’s a picture of them in front of the mural, as well as Latuff’s cartoon version, here. He also drew a cartoon on the wall of a café in Belfast and visited Derry.

“Free all Basque political prisoners” – a new mural launched during Féıle 2012 in Beechmount Avenue, Belfast.

The symbol on the left represents amnesty for Basque prisoners (BasqueMurals). On the right, next to “Basque Belfast Solidarity Committee” (Fb) is the Basque cross of Lauburu (WP).

Jim Stranney

“Jim Stranney, republican and socialist, 1915-1938, fought and died in the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939. ‘You were of the people and for the people your life was laid.’ No pasarán. Erected by Teach Na Fáılte [INLA ex-prisoners] & The Belfast Cultural and Local History Group.” Stranney was killed in an assault on a fascist position near Gandesa on July 30th or 31st, 1938 (Belfast Media | tw). The Maghaberry/Strip Searches mural did not have a painted poster added to it but (as can be seen in Street View) it did have a placard added to the bottom reading “Justice for Marian Price” – this difference is because this mural is under the control of anti-Agreement republicanism rather than pro-Agreement republicanism/Sınn Féın. (The same placard was also mounted in three places in the barbed wire above the wall – see the final image and the Street View link.)

The Guernica mural was left untouched, perhaps for aesthetic reasons, perhaps because it had outside funding.

“4,400 Palestinian political prisoners, 310 administrative detention. No to Israeli administrative detention! Hunger strike!” with portraits of Hanna Shalabi and Khadner Adnan. Adnan went on strike to protest his violent arrest and interrogation, and detention without trial (“administrative detention”); he reached a deal after 66 days (BBC). Shalabi went on hunger strike to protest her detention without trial; she reached a deal and ended the strike after 43 days (The World). Both were alleged to be members of Islamic Jihad.
