Volunteers From The New Barnsley Area

The New Barnsley memorial garden is greatly expanded over the single plaque from 2005, to include a larger main plaque, a smaller one commemorating early resistance “Sheas sıad le chéıle” [They stood together], and wrought-iron gates with a phoenix and “Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann”.

Sleeping Where No Shadows Fall

“In loving memory of military commander Stevie ‘Top Gun’ McKeag, born 1970, died 2000. Sleeping where no shadows fall.” The plaques and the photograph in the centre are new (see previously 2007). The upper plaque [M04257] reads “This mural is dedicated to the memory of Stevie (Top Gun) McKeag from the officers & members of C Company 2nd Battalion UFF. Gone but not forgotten. Quis separabit.” The lower plaque [M04256] reads “In loving memory of our big brother Steven McKeag from jackie, Mary & Melissa. Simply the best.”

The memorial in the middle has now (compared to the original mural) been labelled (on a plinth) “In memory of 36th (Ulster) Division” but the names on the stone remain those of UVF volunteers John Bingham and Thomas Stewart.

The plaques are to (left) Davey Phillips, Patrick McEvoy, (top middle) John Bingham, (right) Thomas Stewart, Chin Taylor. The plaque in the middle is to “the officers and volunteers of of D Company 1st Battalion Ulster Volunteer Force”.

Stevie McCrea

Red Hand Commando volunteer Stevie McCrea was sentenced to 16 years for the murder of James Kerr in 1972 (Behind The Mask) and was subsequently “murdered by the enemies of Ulster” on February 18th, 1989 in an IPLO attack on the Orange Cross (see M00560 | WP). “For he shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary him nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember him.”

This is a repaint of the original mural to McCrea – see T00152.

McCrea is included on murals in south Belfast’s Frenchpark Street and Broadway (dating back to at least 1993).

“I gcuımhne na maırbh dílıs” [“In memory of the faithful dead”] “Clonard martyrs C coy 2nd battalion Belfast Brigade Óglaıgh na hÉıreann roll of honour.” The right-hand plaque commemorates “civilians murdered by loyalists and British forces during the course of the conflict”. “I measc laochra na nGaedheal go raıbh sıad – go ndeana Dıa trócaıre ar a nanamacha”.

Gone But Not Forgotten

“In memory of all our fallen comrades both in the 1st WW Battle Of The Somme and the fight against republicanism from the officers and volunteers of Newtownards – East Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force. Gone but not forgotten.” WWI regimental flags are suspended above the memorial. The actual Scrabo tower, depicted in the left medallion, is visible to the right of frame.

West Winds UVF

“Dedicated to the memory of our lost volunteers who made the supreme sacrifice. Gone but not forgotten.” The inclusion of the PAF [Protestant Action Force] in this UVF/YCV mural in the Westwinds estate, Newtownards, makes it refer to the modern paramilitary force, but the flags on the right of the UVF emblem are WWI regimental flags, making it refer to the Ulster Volunteers. For a similar mix, see YCV-UVF-RHC.

Ballybeen Remembers

The “UVF” on the storage units would be painted over, leaving only the memorial to the 36th (Ulster) Division. The Ballybeen RHC memorial mural on the side would remain until the building was redeveloped and both murals were replaced by a memorial garden.
