“Dedicated to the memory of our lost volunteers who made the supreme sacrifice. Gone but not forgotten.” The inclusion of the PAF [Protestant Action Force] in this UVF/YCV mural in the Westwinds estate, Newtownards, makes it refer to the modern paramilitary force, but the flags on the right of the UVF emblem are WWI regimental flags, making it refer to the Ulster Volunteers. Ballybeen Remembers

The “UVF” on the storage units would be painted over, leaving only the memorial to the 36th (Ulster) Division. The Ballybeen RHC memorial mural on the side would remain until the building was redeveloped and both murals were replaced by a memorial garden.

These Good Men Have Give Their Lives

“It is not for glory we defend Ulster but for Freedom we Fight, which these good men have give their lives.” The men in question are “Vltr”s Hugh McVeigh, Andy Craig, and Brian (Barney) O’Raw from the UFF’s East Belfast brigade 3rd (Ballybeen) battalion (McVeigh and Craig are described as being from G company in the plaque on the right).

Colonel McVeigh was killed in the feud with the UVF in April 1975; Andy Craig was shot by the IRA in September of that year; O’Raw was killed by the UVF in 1997.

Crowley – Carty – Loughran

“I ndıl chuımhne. In proud and loving memory of Óglach Dermot Crowley, Óglach Patrick Carty, Óglach Sean Loughran, Tyrone Brigade Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann who died on active service outside Omagh 25th June 1973. Fuaır sıad bás ar son shaoırse na hÉıreann. ‘If you strike at, or imprison, or kill us, out of our prisons or graves we will still evoke a spirit that will thwart you, and perhaps, raise a force that will destroy you! We defy you! Do your worst’ – James Connolly.” The three died from a premature bomb explosion. For brief biographies, see An Phoblacht.

“I ndíl [ndıl] chuımhne ar Óglach Paul Fox A-Coy 2 Batt Belfast Brigade, died on active service 1-12-1975, Óglach Sean Bailey A-Coy 2 Batt Belfast Brigade, died at this location on active service 13-2-1976, Óglach Paul Marlowe A-Coy 2 Batt Belfast Brigade, died on active service 16-10-1976, Óglach Tony Campbell died of natural causes 4-8-1985. I measc laochra na hÉıreann atá sıad. In every generation we have renewed the struggle and so it will be to the end. When England thinks she has trampled out our blood in battle, some brave men and women rise and rally us again.”

All three 1970s deaths were by premature bomb explosion.

Twinbrook Final Salute

Three generations of republicans, from the Troubles, the Rising, and the Rebellion, salute “F[rankie] Ryan, B[obby] Sands, J[ohn] Rooney, G[erard] Fennell, B[artholomew] Teeling”. The first four are modern IRA volunteers; the last is a United Irishman from Lisburn (Rebel Breeze has a full account of his deeds).

“Remember the hunger strikers, 25th anniversary.” Michael Gaughan and Frank Stagg, who died on hunger strikes in 1974 and 1976 and included in a line of portraits alongside nine of the deceased 1981 hunger strikers; Bobby Sands is shown in the large mural on the right hand side, next to blanket men Hugh Rooney and Freddie Toal.
