St Malachy’s (tw | Fb) is a junior (i.e. 2nd division/B-tier) GAA club established 1936 in the Markets area of south Belfast and also drawing from Ormeau and Short Strand.

It is not known who the four portraits are of (perhaps Sean Flynn bottom left) or who the four players are. Get in touch if you have any information. 

With support from Lorag (the Shaftesbury recreational and leisure centre) and sponsorship (along the bottom) from Pulse, Belfast City Council, New Belfast Community Arts Initiative, the Housing Executive, and Brighter Belfast.

Murdered For Their Faith

The simple Celtic cross that served as a memorial below the plaque of the to the five killed in a UDA attack on a Sean Graham shop on the Ormeau Road on February 5th, 1992, has been upgraded with a large plaque bearing portraits of the five victims – James Kennedy, Willie McManus, Jack Duffin, Peter Magee, Christy Doherty.

“This memorial serves as a reminder of the suffering that was caused, the collusion that lay behind it and our determination that truth and justice will ultimately prevail.”

“Erected on the 20th anniversary in loving memory of those that were murdered for their faith. 1992-2012”

“This ceramic panel is a memorial to the staff of Ulsterbus and Citybus who were killed in the course of their duties during the troubles. The names of the twelve who died are shown on the buses enclosing the lower section of the design. The upper half of the panel representing Belfast includes the old Oxford Street Bus Station, whilst the lower half represents town and country services throughout the province. Dividing the two sections is a river representing the journey from one life to another. Designed and crafted by Diane McCormick, the panel was formally unveiled by Neville Whitehead, Chairman of Citybus, Northern Ireland Railways and Ulsterbus, on the occasion of the opening of Laganside Buscentre on 1 May 1996.”

This is the arch in My Lady’s Road, with Orange Order symbols (crown, ladder, star) surrounding a painting of King Billy and two small banners of Queen Elizabeth and the 36th Division going over the top, from the East Belfast Historical And Cultural Society and the Lagan Village Cultural Society.

Lamentations for the “killed, wounded, missing” among “the west Belfast volunteers who formed in this area”, verse 1:16 in English on the right pillar commemorating the 36th (Ulster) Division – “For these things do I weep/My eyes flow with tears” – and in Irish on the damaged left pillar commemorating the 10th & 16th Irish Divisions – “Seo iad cúis mo chaointe/No [Na?] deora le mo shuile” (the 1981 Bíobla Naofa translation is “Sin an fáth a mbím ag caoi/Agus ag sileadh na súl go fuíoch”).

A tribute to the 4th and 9th battalions of the Royal Irish Rifles “1912-2002 – 90th anniversary” (with the 36th Division emblem in the middle) and (on the right) “S company 1969-1974”. 1974 is the year C company, 1st battalion (west Belfast) UVF was formed.

Free The Five

“Five Cuban patriots unjustly imprisoned in political show trials in Miami in 2001. Join the campaign to release them.” The five were Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González, intelligence agents arrested in 1998 and accused of spying on the US; the Cuban government said they were in the US to infiltrate the Cuban exile community. Their convictions were overturned by a Circuit panel but upheld by the full court (WP).
