“This memorial cross is dedicated to the memory of all the deceased members from St Matthew’s Parish especially those who died as a result of the conflict in our country. Always remembered with love and respect by their families, friends and parishioners. Mary, queen of peace, pray for us. RHC C Company East Belfast

A new memorial garden joins the RHC mural in (the old) Hunt St (off Newtownards Road). “Remember with pride: B. Hamill, G. Taggart, S. Ferguson, S. McClelland, D. Sessions, G. Shaw, J. Johnston [“Johnstone” on the mural plaque], N. Baker, J. Wallace, D. Uprichard, R. Black, B. Bingham, D. Kirkwood.” These are all modern-day volunteers. The soldier in the middle is from WWI. “Dieu et mon droit.”

2014 images show “Ed McKay, P. McClenaghan, and R. Ferguson” added to the main plaque, and a small plaque to Harry Harwood “a true loyalist, sadly missed”

“Dedicated to the people of Belfast, the island of Ireland and beyond who joined the XV International Brigade to fight Fascism in the Spanish Civil War 1936 – 39, and to those men and women from all working traditions who supported the Spanish working people and their Republic. This sculpture was commissioned by the International Brigades Commemoration Committee and unveiled by Bob Doyle International Brigade veteran on 13th October 2007. Sculpted by Anto Brennan. Erected by the Open Window Production Team, Gerard Brennan.”

Somme Memorial

“This memorial was erected by the office bearers and members of the 1st Shankill Somme Association. It is dedicated in solemn, but glorious memory to those brave and gallant men from the greater Shankill who served with the 36th (Ulster) Division and were immortalised on the fields of France and Flanders during the Great War 1914-1918. It stands also as a tribute to the men and women of the greater Shankill, who in the many conflicts which followed the Great War, fought with courage and defiance for crown and country, and made the ultimate sacrifice. ‘At the going down of the sun/And in the morning/We will remember them.'” “The unveiling of this memorial was carried out by Col. D. Smyth  21-02-2009.” “This memorial was dedicated by Rev. Edith Quirey 21-02-2009.”

The board showing Carson inspecting the troops at Fernhill House was added to the right in 2011.

Those From the Ligoniel Area

The large stone in the corner is to Declan McCluskey but does not give a date or manner of death. It is perhaps the Declan McCluskey who died by suicide in 2005 (BBC-NI); his father Francie is included on the central plaque – he was killed by the UFF in 1982.

“This memorial is dedicated to the memory of all those form the Ligoniel area who lost their lives as a result of the conflict in our country. Mary, queen of the Gael, pray for them”; “This plaque is dedicated to the memory of Óglach Declan McCluskey, Óglaıgh na hÉıreann. ‘I love my God overall,’ he said, ‘And then I loved my land. Oh mother dear I was true, to God, to Ireland and to you.'”

The two central plaques read, “I ndıl chuımhne. This plaque is dedicated to the memory of all those from Ligoniel who lost their lives as a result of the conflict in our country. A Mhuıre banríon na nGael guıgh orthu.” and “In loving memory of Terry McCafferty, Michelle Osborne, Vol. Jackie Mooney, Danny O’Neill, Jim Sullivan, Alac Greer, Mary Sloan, Rosemary Brown, Mrs Sloan, Letta Younger, William Younger, Francie McCluskey, John O’Neill, Colm McCallum, Brian McKimm, Leo Scullion, Sammy Bell, Kevin Flood, Brian Duffy, John Todd, Maurice O’Kane. May they rest in peace.”

The Undauntable Thought

“Michael Ferguson Sınn Féın MLA 25-10-53–25-9-06. Sean Keenan Sınn Féın 9-5-50–31-7-06. “It lights the dark of this prison cell/it thunders forth its might/it is the undauntable thought, my friend/the thought that says ‘I’m right'” – Bobby Sands”. Keenan was son of Derry republican Seán Keenan.

“Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann. Óglach Patricia Black 28-11-71–15-11-91. Óglach Frankie Ryan 23-9-66–15-11-91. Beırıgí bua.” The pair died near London when a bomb exploded prematurely.

On Pantridge Road, which runs into Michael Ferguson Roundabout at its eastern end. (See Teeling Family.)

Black and Ryan are also remembered by a plaque in nearby Woodside (M08902).

Strabane’s Republican Graves

Gravestones to brothers Michael, David, and Hugh Devine, to Charles Breslin, who died alongside Michael and David, to “all those who gave their lives” – “Go luí cré ársa Thír Eoghaın go héadrom ar uıgheanna ár laochraı uaısle” [May the ancient Tyrone clay lie lightly on the graves of our noble warriors]; this headstone is featured in a Fountain Street mural – and Danny McCauley – “Where there is a struggle for justice, the desire for freedom and resistance to exploitation, there will always be a Danny McCauley.”

West Tyrone Command

Updated version of the monument to West Tyrone Command (seen in 2005) – perhaps with new fencing. A modern volunteer stands on the left, Cú Chulaınn on the right. “In proud memory of Vol. Charles Breslin age 20, Vol. Michael Devine age 22, Vol. David Devine age 16. West Tyrone command, Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann. Killed by crown forces near this spot 23 Feb. 1985.” The three were killed in an alleged shoot-to-kill incident. Obituaries in An Phoblacht.

This memorial stone is erected to commemorate the deaths of 10 republican volunteers who died in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh prison in the cause of Irish freedom. Their supreme sacrifice changed the course of Irish history forever. Their suffering and subsequent deaths showed the inhumane barbarity of a British government in its attempts to deny our people their liberty and rights as a free nation.”
