Remember The 14 Men

After the Saville report (gov.uk) was published in 2010, the PSNI took up its own investigation into the events of Bloody Sunday (January 30th, 1972), which is still on-going (see Bloody Sunday: Appeal For Witnesses). The Derry graffiti shown here calls for justice for the 14 people who died as a result of 1 Para’s attack. The DUP’s Gregory Campbell claims that the prosecution of British Army soldiers would be “disastrous” (BelTel). Victims’ rights groups have described calls for an end to all enquiries as “a betrayal” (BBC).

The Sagart

A tribute to Father Alec Reid, who died on November 22nd, 2013, and buried on the 27th, has been added to the international wall on Divis Street. Reid was a priest in the nearby Clonard monastery and helped negotiate between Sinn Féin and the SDLP and between nationalists and the government of the Republic. He is perhaps best known for attempting to save Corporals Wood and Howe and administering the last rites to them, in 1988 (WP).

This piece takes the place of a ‘Free Marian Price” mural on the International Wall (Divis St); Price was freed on May 30th, 2013.

Civil Rights For All Protestants

“Glencairn demands civil rights for all Protestants now!” and “RIP Maggie Thatcher, the Iron Lady – true legend.” Thatcher died on April 8th, 2013. The specific reason for the tarp, if any, is unknown; it might be the ban on marching past the Ardoyne shops (CSMonitor).

Forthriver Road, Belfast.

Faded Glory

These three pairs of UK shields (Ulster Banner, St Andrew’s Saltire, Union Flag) are in Lindsay Street, south Belfast. There was also a fourth one, with the shield of the 36th Division. The were mounted in the four spaces (and in two cases, on the backing boards) used for a set of older boards, and the old title strip is still visible in the first two images: “Relief Of Londonderry” can be seen in the first image, while “Williamite cavalry charge, Aughrim” is visible in the second.

(The other two were “Jacobites fleeing at Enniskillen” and “Battle Of The Boyne”. For the four previous pieces, from left to right, see D00353, D00355, D00354, and D00356.)

Daffodil Nation

“The Ulster conflict is about nationality. This we shall maintain” with the red hand for “Ulster”, the thistle for Scotland, the Union Flag for the UK, the rose for England, and – new to this version of the mural – the daffodil for Wales. For the previous version of the mural, which uses the dragon for Wales, see M02376.
