Palestine Abú

This is a large mural is by Gerard “Mo Chara” Kelly‘s (video) new work at the top of Springhill Avenue, where it is blocked off from the Springfield Road.

On the left, a figure in a black-and white keffiyeh give the two-finger ‘V for victory’ sign beneath the Terence McSwiney (WP) quote: “It is not those who can inflict the most but those that can suffer the most who will conquer.”

In the middle, a protestor stands up to an Israeli tank with a swastika. (See the adjacent mural in Palestinian Territory.)

On the right, an Israeli Apache helicopter fires a Hellfire missile at a young Gazan boy carrying a teddy-bear (originally a Carlos Latuff (ig) poster).

Palestinian Territory

Here is a set of pro-Palestinian murals at the top of Springhill, inspired by recent events in Gaza.

The second (from left to right) shows Palestinian teenager Faris Odeh throwing a rock at an Israeli tank; Odeh was shot and killed a few days later (WP). The AP photograph on which the mural is based can be seen in this May 2012 edition of (the Pakistani) The Nation.

The final two are intended to show four stages of the disappearing Palestinian territories (on the left) and four stages of the disappearing Irish gaeltacht (on the right). The Palestinian one was completed – see below – but the Irish one never was.

End The Siege On Gaza

“The Market community supports Palestine – End the siege on Gaza – Free Palestine”. Tears of blood flow from a boy’s face, shrouded by a Palestinian flag and behind barbed wire. Along the bottom, in red lettering, is a quote from Malcolm X’s autobiography: “If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the [people who are being] oppressed and loving the oppressor [the people who are doing the oppressing].”

The mural was launched on 2014-07-29.

Do Not Disturb

“Short Strand supports Gaza – tacaíonn An Trá Ghearr le Gaza”. The centre of this mural is Carlos Latuff’s cartoon Do Not Disturb – War Criminals Working. Israel, in the form of an aproned Benjamin Netanyahu, is butchering the people of Gaza. The world watches with some concern, Ban Ki-Moon and the UN look away, and the Arab League is asleep. The United States, in the form of Barack Obama, prevents any intervention.

The second image gives a wide shot of the long wall on Mountpottinger Road, which has its own Visual History page.

Short Strand, east Belfast.

Leila Khaled

Palestinian icon Leila Khaled, who took part in aeroplane hijackings in 1969 and 1970, is featured in this new mural pro-Gaza mural in Hugo Street. The central portrait is a replication of a famous photo by Eddie Adams (WP), taken after her first skyjacking; she then underwent plastic surgery to disguise her identity prior to the 1970 attempt (WP).

Khaled is also featured in the pro-Gaza mural in McQuillan Street: Oppression Breeds Resistance

This mural replaces the right-hand side of Think Independently, Vote Independently.

On the left is an éirígí stencil calling for “Acht Na Gaeılge Anoıs!!!” – “An Irish Language Act Now!!!” The Belfast Telegraph reports that an Irish language bill will be published in the near future, though the DUP have already rejected such an Act. (For more background and discussion see Brian Walker’s post on Slugger.)

In the middle remains JFTC2.

St James Supports Gaza

A Claddagh ring connotes friendship (caırdeas – sadaaka (صدقة)), love, and loyalty, here between Ireland and Palestine. The ring’s band is composed of their two flags.

The wide shot shows the adjacent “Free Palestine” mural, also featuring the Palestinian flag.

Replaces a Che stencil and a Cliftonville-Celtic mural.

Oppression Breeds Resistance

“Oppression breeds resistance”, in the form of Leila Khaled and an IRA gunman, and a clenched fist in the colours of the Palestinian flag. This is a new pro-Gaza mural in the middle Falls with Irish “Tıocfaıdh ár lá” [our day will come] and Arabic “يومنا قادم” [our day is coming] (and in the shields “Saoırse” and “حرية”[freedom]).

The artist is DD Walker (“Rebel Rebel”), who painted the Blood Of An Irish Rebel Che Guevara mural last (2013) October which this replaces.
