The mural above, painted in 1981, shows a phoenix rising from the shields of the four provinces and a stand of three flags: Starry Plough, Tricolour, and Sunburst. The flags are flying from regular poles, before the custom took hold of painting flags on pikes in order to include the 1798 rebellion. The mural continued to exist, untouched, for many years and is the oldest original mural in the north.

On the left, a Bible quote — “No greater love hath a man than he lays down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13] — and The 5 Demands — No prison uniform, no prison work, free association, letters, visits, etc., full remission — with the oak leaf and crossed rifles of the Derry Brigade Provisional IRA in between.
On the right, Starry Plough, fractured “H”, and Irish Tricolour are linked by barbed wire. With posters above for hunger-strikers Pat Sheehan, Jackie McMullan, [Hugh] Gerry Carville, who all ended their strikes when October 3rd, 1981, when the strike was ended.

Here is a wide shot of the panels in Bishop Street. Some of these were previously featured in close-up (Patsy O’Hara | Broken H | Saor Éıre | Spirit Of Freedom | Unlock H Block | Flags And Shields) but a few were not: Victory To The Hunger Strikers and a harp, to the right (probably with “You can kill the revolutionary but not the revolution”).

Rising behind a set of crosses, it’s not clear whether the sunburst in the mural above is only religious in nature or also symbolises the Fianna. It rises between the Starry Plough and the Tricolour. To the left is a list of the deceased hunger-strikers — Roll of honour: Volunteers B. Sands MP, F. Hughes, R. McCreesh, P. O’Hara, J. McDonnell, M. Hurson, K. Lynch, K. Doherty TD, T. McElwee, M. Devine.” — and to the right, a poem: The Volunteer: I stood beside an Irish grave/A green and silent plot/A little cross marked RIP/Was all that marked the spot.
