20th anniversary tarp on the side of the Falls Road Library, Belfast. Originally an 8 x 8 canvas, from which a 30 x 30 tarp was printed and hung in Harlem (see J0886) and this 20 x 20 version printed and brought to Belfast. For info on the faces in the corners, see the 2002 post.

Hunger Strikers Memorial

2004 images of the hunger strikers memorial in Rossville Street, Derry, featuring a large stone ‘H’ and a lark in barbed wire.

For images of the two stones to either side of the ‘H’, see the 2001 entry. The large stone at a short distance behind the middle of the H is a memorial to the Derry Brigade.

Freedom Grows

This is a 20′ x 20′ tarp of an 8′ x 8′ painting done by Mo Chara, shipped over from New York and placed on the side of the Falls library, Belfast. It honours the ten deceased 1981 hunger strikers with a verse from a Bobby Sands poem and a border of celtic knotwork, the crests of the four provinces, and other revolutionary and civil rights heroes, include Gandhi, MLK, Gaughan & Stagg, Leonard Peltier/the AIM, Nelson Mandela, Maıréad Farrell, and Nora Connolly.

Remember The Hunger Strikers

Here are six images of the hunger strikers mural in Mountpottinger Road, Belfast. The ten portraits are on cut wooden boards while the rest is painted. On the far right (image 5) is a “spirit of freedom” lark and the names of the ten deceased 1981 strikers. In the centre (image 3) is blanket man Hugh Rooney.

2002 image of the republican prisoners board in Beechmount Avenue, Belfast. In addition to the 1981 hunger strikers and Stagg and Gaughan, the mural mentions Paddy Joe Crawford, Francis Dodds, Patrick Teer, Teddy Campbell, Hugh Coney, Jim Moyne, Henry Henry, Sean Bateson, Pol Kinsella (all from Long Kesh), Tom Smyth, Brendan Seery, Paddy Kelly (Portlaoise), Noel Jenkinson and Sean O’Conaill (who died in English prisons).

“I ndıl chuımhne na gcımí poblachtánacha a fuaır bás ı ngéıbheann ı rıth na coımhlınte reatha seo.” [In memory of the republican prisoners who died in captivity in the course of this ongoing (lit. running) contest.]
