Bishop Street

Here is a wide shot of the panels in Bishop Street. Some of these were previously featured in close-up (Patsy O’Hara | Broken H | Saor ÉıreSpirit Of Freedom | Unlock H BlockFlags And Shields) but a few were not: Victory To The Hunger Strikers and a harp, to the right (probably with “You can kill the revolutionary but not the revolution”).

Sasanach Amach

M00156+

“English Out”: Britain in the form of a riot policeman batoning a bloodied Ireland was (and remains) the symbol of the Troops Out Movement, an British pro-(Irish-)Nationalist organisation founded in 1973. The image of Britain in riot gear beating Ireland with a truncheon first appeared in the Irish Citizen newspaper and was designed by Jack Clafferty (Red Mole).

“Sasanach” is one English person, whereas the sentiment is presumably that they [Sasanaigh] should all leave. But that doesn’t rhyme so well.

Unite To Fight Hunger Torture Death

M00082+

In addition to the board at the top of the stairs there is a tricolour with “IRA” on it (to the left) and (on the right) the names, in Irish, of the first four hunger-strikers on either side of a celtic cross: Roıbeard Ó Seachnasagh, Eamonn Mac Craoıs, Pronsıas Ó hAodha, and Pádraıg Ó hEadhra.

For the twin end-wall, see Their Hunger, Their Pain, Our Struggle.

Until The Last Prisoner Is Free

M00058+

There is a lot going on in this image: pedestrians pass in front of a row of boarded-up shops, above them is written “Until the last prisoner is free we are all imprisoned” with posters of the hunger strikers, an Irish tricolour and “If they die, you die”; on the left “No, not a dog, but a POW” and a version of the five demands, concerning prison uniforms, work, association, parcels, and remission.
