“In memory of Charles Moore, Frank McCarron, Michael McGinley, Bernard [“Barney”] Kelly, Charles McCafferty, who were killed in Annie’s Bar on the 20th December 1972.” The five were killed by two (allegedly) UDA gunmen as they watched soccer in the Top Of The Hill bar. For more, see Pat Finucane Centre.

Update: There were calls in 2017 for the investigation into the killings to be reopened (BBC-NI).

William McFadzean

“Pte William McFadzean, 36th (Ulster) Division (109 Brigade), 9th October 1895-1st July 1916, Age 20, Victoria Cross.” McFadzean earned the VC for throwing himself on some live grenades that had fallen into the trench. To the left and right are the emblems of the 36th Division and the Ulster Volunteer Force.

Mousey & Kaneo

Volunteers R[obert] Anderson (Mousey [sometimes “Mousie”]) and T[revor] Kane (Kaneo) in Owenroe Drive, Bangor. Neither appears in Sutton’s Index, suggesting that they died after the Good Friday Agreement. Both names appear on the monument across the street.

Vol Micky Devine

Michael “Mickey” (though here “Micky”) Devine was a founder member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) in his native Derry (The Plough & The Stars) and also of the INLA (IRSP Derry). The mural on the gable shown above includes the socialist symbols of the red star and the plough, great bear (ursa major), or “big dipper” shining over the towers of Long Kesh, where Devine died on the 21st of August, 1981, after 60 days on hunger strike, the tenth and final striker to die.
