“There can be no dignity in labour, till labour knows no master.” The statue of Jim Larkin in Donegall Street Place has been augmented with a massive mural celebrating the many unions which have membership in Ireland. 2013 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Dublin lock-out, which ran from August 1913 to January 1914. The three female figures in the border to the right of Larkin are Winifred Carney, Inez McCormack, and ?Betty Sinclair?.

“The Dockers’ Strike Centenary Window 1907” designed by John McLaughlin, featuring Big Jim Larkin above the words “Not as Catholics or Protestants, not as nationalists or unionists, but as Belfast workers standing together.
“The Famine Window” designed by Calderwood Glass, in memory of “those citizens of Belfast who died as a result of Typhus and Cholera in the years 1846, 1847 and 1848.”
A memorial window to British Army soldiers “who have served in the city of Belfast and the province since 1969”, a UDR memorial window, and (in two images) UDR memorial window.

“This ceramic panel is a memorial to the staff of Ulsterbus and Citybus who were killed in the course of their duties during the troubles. The names of the twelve who died are shown on the buses enclosing the lower section of the design. The upper half of the panel representing Belfast includes the old Oxford Street Bus Station, whilst the lower half represents town and country services throughout the province. Dividing the two sections is a river representing the journey from one life to another. Designed and crafted by Diane McCormick, the panel was formally unveiled by Neville Whitehead, Chairman of Citybus, Northern Ireland Railways and Ulsterbus, on the occasion of the opening of Laganside Buscentre on 1 May 1996.”

“The people’s taxis”, meaning the people of nationalist west Belfast, as is clear from the imagery surrounding the WBTA terminal entrance: Fionn eating the salmon of knowledge (while standing on the Giant’s Causeway), The Limerick Piper (transposed to Belfast’s Cave Hill) by John Patrick Haverty (1794-1854) (also reproduced in this Ardoyne mural), and a copy of Jim Fitzpatrick’s Sadb.

“Thomas Russell, 1767-1803, United Irishman, “the man from God knows where“, librarian 1794-1796”. Russell was the second librarian of the Linen Hall Library and was arrested there in 1796 on a charge of inciting rebellion. For his part in the rebellion of 1803 he was executed by beheading at Downpatrick gaol, on October 21st.
