Ulster Tower

“The Ulster Tower is a memorial to the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division. It was officially opened on 19th November 1921 by Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson. The tower is located close to the Schweben Redoubt, a German stronghold at the edge of Thiepval Wood, France, which the Ulster Division attacked at 7.30 am on the 1st July 1916.” “This mural was dedicated to the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division on 31st July 2010 by the West Belfast Athletic And Cultural Society. ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends’ – John 15:13”.

Together We Stand Alone

“Together we stand alone, we band of brothers.” The four panels show the Ulster Volunteers become soldiers of the 36th Division, leaving the north vulnerable to nationalist attack (“Deserted I Stand Alone“) but raising the Division flag in the style of the Marine Corps monument in Arlington National Cemetery (USA). (This panel takes the place of the hooded gunmen that were previously in the centre.)

City Of Culture

In July of 2010, Londonderry (or “Derry~Londonderry” as it would be styled) (BBC) was chosen as the first UK ‘city of culture’, with a programme of events taking place in 2013 (Culture NI). This Fountain mural shows a Union Flag United Kingdom and the shields of the four ‘home’ nations.

Wide shot of two Castlemara murals – one UDA, one UVF – previously seen in 2008. The fourth flag in the UFF mural is the flag of Ulster Nationalism (WP). Similarly, on the lamp-post fly both the UDA emblem and a flag commemorating the Ulster Volunteers in the 36th Division.

The Union Flag board is on North Road.
