Sarcoma Awareness

For a second year, Free Derry Corner is painted yellow as part of “Paul’s Campaign” for “Sarcoma awareness” – named after Paul Coyle who died of the disease at age 26 in 2011.

In the bottom left is a short poem: “Wear the colour yellow/Wear it proudly on your breast/Brightly show the bystanders/Our campaign it will not rest//Our fight is to highlight a disease/So harmful and so vile/To ignore it is to encourage it/To rid our face of smiles//So brightly wear that yellow/Don’t turn your face away/Raise awareness of sarcoma/Consign it to yesterday!”

Free Derry Corner has its own Visual History page.

Security Directed Labour Party

In February (2015) the SDLP changed its position on the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Assembly voted to allow it to operate (beyond ‘customs and borders’ functions) in Northern Ireland – it has been operating in Britain since 2013 (BBC | Irish Times). Sınn Féın continues to oppose the NCA (BBC).

Join The UDA

This Castlemara (Carrickfergus) has been criticized by both DUP and Alliance councillors (Newsletter). The final words – “Join the UDA” – have drawn particular ire, as in other respects it is similar to other murals in featuring hooded gunmen, such as these two other Carrickfergus murals: InclusionEternal Vigilance. (Nolan Show discussion of the mural on 2015-02-11: Part 1Part 2)

The mural sports a hooded gunman facing the viewer with a slogan borrowed from Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata: “Better to die on your feet than live on your knees in an Irish republic. Join the UDA.”

But What Did They Do?

The Craigavon Two – John-Paul Wootton and Brendan McConville – were convicted in 2012 of the 2009 murder of PSNI Constable Steven Carroll (BBC) and sentenced to 18- and 25-year minimums, respectively. The case is under review (Guardian) and a campaign for their release – using the hashtag “#JFTC2” – is under way (Fb).
