Monkstown 1st Batt UDA

This is a new version of the Monkstown UDA 1st battalion mural on Devenish Drive. The previous showed volunteers on manoeuvres in front of Three Mile Water aqueduct in the top portion. This new mural shows graveside volunteers with assault rifles point down, mourning William Hobbs and James Boyd McClurg. The two died from a premature bomb explosion on May 10th, 1977, across the road from the mural in Seagoe Gardens; Hobbs died immediately, McClurg of his injuries a few weeks later. “All gave some, some gave all.”

Neither the Fountain Young Defenders or the Young Loyalists seem to have existed as an organisation, just as an idea in the mind of an artists on the walls of Wapping Lane. “No surrender 09”, “UDA Fountain Wombles“.

The side wall, which specifically named JJ Gray and Rab Brown (see the previous (2005) version) is repainted in favour of a generic memorial: “This mural is in memory of our fallen comrades. We forget them not. Q[uis] S[eparabit]”.

Carrickfergus UYM

Armed and hooded UFA volunteers in jeans protect Carrickfergus castle, beneath the shields of the four nations of the UK. The UDA and UFF flags bear the names of the areas within South East Antrim. Vandalised (with “fuck you”) compared to 2008. The Birches, Carrickfergus.

John Gregg

“South East Antrim [UDA/UYM]. In proud memory of Brig. John Gregg, T. Daly, B. Hobbs, B. Smyth, J. Kelly, G. Evans, J. McClure, W. Gordon, G. Fittis, A. Helm. Quis separabit.” Gregg was a hero to loyalists for seriously injuring Gerry Adams in 1984. He was killed in the Adair feud in 2003.
