Discover Ireland

M00311 Bligh's Gdns 1985+

Darkly humorous mural in Bligh’s Gardens, Derry, parodying the ‘Discover Ireland’ tourism advertisements: “Discover Ireland: sectarian RUC, loyalist UDR, the H Blocks, plastic bullets, murdering UDA, British thugs, Armagh hell-hole, special courts … but I bet you haven’t seen the half of it.”

Four pieces of graffiti from Unity Flats. “1971 No Trials, 1984 Show Trials” (referring to the Supergrass system) along with “IRSP” (Irish Republican Socialist Party) and “FSLN” (Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional), a red star and a sickle; “If you want the RUC in Newry, ring 999 and ask for 9” (referring to a February 1985 mortar attack that killed 9 officers); “Kirkpatrick Paid Informer” (referring to the INLA’s Harry Kirkpatrick (WP); and “INLA-Freedom”.

M00283+

These two murals — one about censorship (“Many have eyes but cannot see?”) and one about the death by platic bullet of Sean Downes (“Sean Downes RIP — Who Next” see this NYTimes article for a description) — are adjacent to one another in Blucher Street, Derry. “Many Have Eyes” is based on a poster from the May 1968 Paris Uprising, “Information Libre” (below).

Ireland’s Cross To Bear

M00121+

M00122+

Here are four panels on Beechmount Avenue (Belfast) in 1981 depicting (from left to right) Ireland in the grip of a fist with a Union Flag cufflink, a prison guard whose mouth holds prison bars, a naked figure in a tricoloured scarf crucified on a Union Flag, and Ireland carrying a cross “Made in Britain”.

At least three of the original images are by Jack Clafferty, a founder member of the Troops Out Movement, and can be found on-line.
