This Castlemara (Carrickfergus) has been criticized by both DUP and Alliance councillors (Newsletter). The final words – “Join the UDA” – have drawn particular ire, as in other respects it is similar to other murals in featuring hooded gunmen, such as these two other Carrickfergus murals: Inclusion | Eternal Vigilance. (Nolan Show discussion of the mural on 2015-02-11: Part 1 | Part 2)

The mural sports a hooded gunman facing the viewer with a slogan borrowed from Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata: “Better to die on your feet than live on your knees in an Irish republic. Join the UDA.”

South East Antrim UDA

“South East Antrim Ulster Defence Association” with shamrock, thistle, and rose, but not the daffodil – though the Welsh “Red Dragon” is included alongside the Scottish Saltire, the flag of Northern Ireland, and Queen Elizabeth II’s royal standard. 

The mural originally read “Ulster Defence Union” rather than “Ulster Defense Association” – see X01208.

Sunnylands RHC

This is a vintage cut-out in the Sunnylands estate (visible in 2008 Google Street View). The central board – a RHC emblem – had a plastic or paper layer between the star/wings and the circular back-board with red-white-and-blue colours and the words “Red Hand Commando” in a circle. The hooded gunmen on either side each appear to be a single, painted, carving.

UFF Carrickfergus

The upper flag on the right-hand side of this mural – purple saltire on a blue background with star and red hand – is the proposed flag of Ulster nationalists. The position was espoused by the UDA of the 1970s, under the guise of the political parties the Ulster Loyalist Democratic Party (WP) and the Ulster Democratic Party (WP), and for a time by the Red Hand Commandos under the Ulster Loyalist Central Coordinating Committee (WP).

100 Years Of The Covenant

The mural above uses the text of the Ulster Covenant, signed in September, 1912, as a backdrop to a composite of Edward Carson speaking and a row of Ulster Volunteers, formed in January 1913. (See Extramural Activity for the source photos.)

Alain Miossec has an image of the previous printed version, which is almost identical, apart from Stormont as a backdrop rather than the text of the Covenant.

These two plaques have been mounted on the curved brick wall at the junction of Woodburn Road and Woodburn Avenue, Carrickfergus.

“To honour the men and women who served in the ranks of the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC [Conspicuous Gallantry Cross]. We will remember them.”

“In memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country and are still doing so.”

The painting of King Billy is by John Darren Sutton and was produced on a grand scale in Tavanagh Street, Village, south Belfast – see Hang Out Our Banners.
