D Company Ballysillan

The memorial in the middle has now (compared to the original mural) been labelled (on a plinth) “In memory of 36th (Ulster) Division” but the names on the stone remain those of UVF volunteers John Bingham and Thomas Stewart.

The plaques are to (left) Davey Phillips, Patrick McEvoy, (top middle) John Bingham, (right) Thomas Stewart, Chin Taylor. The plaque in the middle is to “the officers and volunteers of of D Company 1st Battalion Ulster Volunteer Force”.

Who Have Resisted And Still Resist

“This plaque is dedicated to the people of the greater Clonard who have resisted and still resist the occupation of our country by Britain. We acknowledge with pride the sacrifices they made throughout every decade. Their names would be too numerous to mention, and their deeds of bravery and resistance are un-equalled in the history of our struggle. We, the republican ex-prisoners of the greater Clonard, salute you, and your reward will only be a united Ireland.” This is the plaque in the left-hand third of the Clonard memorial garden.

Annie’s Bar

“In memory of Charles Moore, Frank McCarron, Michael McGinley, Bernard [“Barney”] Kelly, Charles McCafferty, who were killed in Annie’s Bar on the 20th December 1972.” The five were killed by two (allegedly) UDA gunmen as they watched soccer in the Top Of The Hill bar. For more, see Pat Finucane Centre.

Update: There were calls in 2017 for the investigation into the killings to be reopened (BBC-NI).

Seen previously in 2003.

West Winds UVF

“Dedicated to the memory of our lost volunteers who made the supreme sacrifice. Gone but not forgotten.” The inclusion of the PAF [Protestant Action Force] in this UVF/YCV mural in the Westwinds estate, Newtownards, makes it refer to the modern paramilitary force, but the flags on the right of the UVF emblem are WWI regimental flags, making it refer to the Ulster Volunteers.
