Our Fallen Friends

Five-part memorial from Freeman Memorial Flute Band (Fb) “in memory of our fallen friends, [UVF] Lt David Swanson, Vol Aubrey Reid, Vol Mark Dodds, killed on active service 2nd October 1975. Robbie Freeman, died 27th December 1997.” As is common to both republicans and loyalists, “active service” means a premature bomb explosion. Four people listed died in a car explosion at Farrenlester, just outside Coleraine – the three listed and a fourth who is variously named as Geoffrey, Robert, or Andrew Freeman. The date for “Robbie Freeman” is perhaps a relative (father?) of the Freeman who died in 1972.

Sans Peur

It’s not clear how long this mural has been in place (possibly 1994 or earlier), but this is a design (four wings of the UDA in the quadrants of an Ulster Banner shield) with a long heritage – see 1988 in the Fountain, Londonderry, 1990 in the Waterside, Londonderry, 1988 variation in Belfast.

For a view of the “Ulster 1690” behind the wall, see X02887.

We’ll Not Be Mastered By No Rebel Basterds

Here is a gallery of 27 images from loyal Mullaghglass, on the outskirts of Newry. In addition to Union Flags, Ulster Banners, and UVF/RHC emblems, we see a number of PAF [Protestant Action Force] emblems, the South Down Defenders flute band, and a portrait of QEII.

Freedom Of Speech

“Freedom Of Speech” was the name given to a piece that the Bogside Artists did during a stay at Hanover College in November 2010, during a tour of the USA. In that piece, the mouth was closed with plain red tape (Hanover) but for this local version, the mouth is closed with tape that combines the Union Flag with green and orange strands.

As the second image shows, the piece did not last long when put outside – the difference in date between the two images is four days.

Our Brave Defenders

This is the completed version of the mural earlier shown in-progress. The four main panels show the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division going over the top on the first day of the Somme (1st July 1916), the “angel of Mons” (WP), Ulster Tower (“This tower was dedicated to the glory of God. In grateful memory of the officers, non commissioned officers and men of the 36th (Ulster) Division, and of the sons of Ulster in other forces who laid down their lives in the great war, and of all their comrades in arms who, by divine grace, were spared to testify to their glorious deeds. ‘Throughout the long years of struggle …. the men of Ulster have proved how nobly they fight and die’ – 16th November 1918 King George V”), and Thiepval Memorial (“Dear men and brothers, going out/to fight for Ulster’s need/we hail you with a mighty shout/brave friends, and true in deed.//Your country holds you in renown/your names will never be dead/and some sweet angel has a crown/for each dear, manly head.”)

Loyalist Seapatrick

The Ulster Banner and Union Flag serve as bookends for two additional boards: “Still loud, still proud – No surrender” (presumably Seapatrick Flute Band) and the insignia of the 36th (Ulster) Division.

To Those Who Gave Their All For The Great War

The portraits are of Edward Henry Carson and Private William McFadzean VC; the stone is a “Sydenham Roll Of Honour”. The insignia of various British Army units are shown over the hills around Thiepval and a sea of poppies. Seen previously from a distance in 2010.
