1998’s Good Friday (or: Belfast) Agreement called for a human rights commission to advise on a bill of rights. Ten years later (in 2008) the commission presented its report. The list above is from The Community Foundation [For] Northern Ireland. Comhairle Phobail na bhFál (Falls Community Council): “Life; freedom of thought and religion; peaceful assembly; freedom from torture, cruelty; national self-determination; fair conditions of work; join a trade union; social security; maternity leave; be protected from exploitation; housing; education; participate in cultural life.” (A further ten years later – 2018 – there is still no bill.)

Kieran Nugent

The Kieran Nugent mural at the corner of Divis Street and Northumberland Street is repainted to include posters from the time of the blanket protest and also in tribute to Brendan ‘The Dark’ Hughes, IRA OC in the H-Blocks at the time of the first (1980) hunger strike. He passed away in February, 2008.

Free Palestine From 60 Years Of Nakba!

“Nakba” or “Catastrophe” is the Arabic name for the exodus of about 700,000 Palestinian Arabs in 1948, from what would become Israel. Although the mural states “We will return!”, there has as yet been not right of return or compensation for lands seized.

The graffiti in blue on the wall reads “You destroy our homes but we build a nation”.

Please get in touch if you can translate the Arabic.

Manchester Martyrs

A Manchester Martyrs mural is returned to Divis Street’s “International Wall” after being replaced for a short time by Las Brigadas Internacionales. The new mural is somewhat similar to the original mural, with portraits of the “martyrs” – IRB members William Philip Allen, Michael Larkin, and Michael O’Brien – and a reproduction of a painting showing the IRB’s attack on the prison van which killed a guard (see the post on the original mural).

Martin Meehan

“A leader is gone – the legend forever lives on! Codaıl samh a chomradaí.” Long-time IRA volunteer Martin Meehan, who went with the Provisionals in the split, spent 18 years in prison during the Troubles, and stood in various elections for Sınn Féın, died of a heart attack in November 2007. Divis Street, Belfast.

William Morgan

“In loving memory of William Morgan (Big Willie). Will always be remembered and sadly missed by all his mates in Tigers Bay. Murdered by cowards 11th July 2002. You will never be forgotten ‘big man’.” Morgan was struck by a hit-and-run car on July 6th, 2002 and died in hospital five days later. The car is reported to have deliberately mounted the kerb where he was walking on North Queen Street and the attack was thought to have been sectarian, as the alleged driver and passenger were republicans and the car was found burned out in the New Lodge (NewsLetter | IndyMedia).
