Free The Five

“Five Cuban patriots unjustly imprisoned in political show trials in Miami in 2001. Join the campaign to release them.” The five were Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González, intelligence agents arrested in 1998 and accused of spying on the US; the Cuban government said they were in the US to infiltrate the Cuban exile community. Their convictions were overturned by a Circuit panel but upheld by the full court (WP).

Irish Republican History Museum

After a long time ‘in progress’, the cell below the republican history museum board is completed. Previously there was a portrait of Wolfe Tone.

No To Israeli Administrative Detention!

“4,400 Palestinian political prisoners, 310 administrative detention. No to Israeli administrative detention! Hunger strike!” with portraits of Hanna Shalabi and Khadner Adnan. Adnan went on strike to protest his violent arrest and interrogation, and detention without trial (“administrative detention”); he reached a deal after 66 days (BBC). Shalabi went on hunger strike to protest her detention without trial; she reached a deal and ended the strike after 43 days (The World). Both were alleged to be members of Islamic Jihad.

Political Status For Republican Prisoners

“Honour our patriot dead – wear an Easter lily”. “Political status for republican prisoners – www.éırígí.org“. These are two small boards below the advertising hoarding at the junction of Northumberland Street and the Falls Road, Belfast. The web address only works with the fadas removed.

Climate Change Affects Everyone

“Climate Change Affects Everyone … But Not Equally”. The sands of time are running out: carbon spewing into the atmosphere from factories (on the left) is melting the ice-caps, leaving polar bears without a place to stand (upper hourglass) and flooding Belfast (lower hourglass), and the Statue Of Liberty too.

“Reduce your carbon footprint.” With support from Eco-Schools and Trócaire.

County Antrim Memorial

“Honour Ireland’s dead – wear an Easter lily.” This Beechmount Avenue/Ascaıll Ard Na bhFeá mural is a memorial to republicans from County Antrim from 1798 to 1966 – when the ‘County Antrim Memorial’ was raised in Milltown on the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising – and beyond; it is pictured in the lower right, a large cross-shaped monument. Tom Williams (WP), an IRA volunteer who was executed during the Northern Campaign (during the second world war) and is buried in the plot, is mentioned specifically on the headstone in the lower left.

Political Hostage

Owen Paterson (with one “t”) is the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland who revoked Price’s licence last year after she appeared at an Easter rally but those charges have just been dismissed (BBC). This Marian Price (WP) mural on the Whiterock Road was launched on May 13 to protest her continued incarceration. The stencil is in Beechmount Street.

“Ní thıg leat Éıre a chloígh, ní thıg leat fonn saoırse mhuıntır na hÉıreann a mhúc[h]adh.” [You cannot subdue Ireland; you cannot extinguish the desire for the freedom of the Irish people.]

Shown in the distance below Cú Chulaınn are (left and middle) the mural of McCrudden-O’Rawe–Jordan and memorial garden on Divismore Way and (on the right) the Springhill shops.

The male figures in the foreground are unnamed but the four in jackets are presumably Stone, McWilliams, McCracken, and Dougal after their mural in Springhill Drive was blanked; the female activists on the left of Cú Chulaınn are Mary Austin, Kathleen Clarke, Annie McWilliams. “This mural was unveiled by Gerry Adams MP 2nd May 2010.” “Vote Sınn Féın Vote Adams
