The Fountain is the only Protestant area on the west bank of the Foyle river and it is surrounded by a “peace” line. The original siege of Derry was in 1688.
This is a new location for a message that has been in the Fountain since the 1980s. See previously 1988 and 1990 in Kennedy Place and 2002 | 2004 | 2006 in Hawkin Street.
The mural of the ten 1981 hunger strikers is replaced by portraits of the twelve modern hunger-strike deaths (including Frank Stagg and Michael Gaughan) on Bishop Street (Without) in Derry.
“In memory of Robert (Guinney) McGuinness murdered by British troops on 26th June 1973. Always remembered by his friends.” McGuinness was shot from a saracen on the 22nd near his home and died four days later. Those on the scene recount his death in this Derry Journal article.
“This memorial is dedicated to the memory of Volunteer Micky Devine, Irish National Liberation Army and H-Block martyr who gave his life on 20th August 1981. Also dedicated to his nine brave comrades. ‘Our freedom must be had at all hazards. If the men of property will not help us they must fall; we will free ourselves by the aid of that large and respectable class of the community – the men of no property’ – Theobold Wolfe Tone”
“Republican Network For Unity – Has British policing worked for you? Build Community. Reclaim our streets.” RNU was formed in 2007, splitting from Sinn Féın over their support of the PSNI.
“Longtower Youth Club – 66 years serving the community”. An oak leaf (for Derry) combined with a dove (for peace) next to three panels (only on of which is shown) of “Brandywell Sporting Heroes”. St Columba’s Walk, Derry.
“This dolmen was erected in memory of the fallen volunteers of the 1st Battalion Derry Brigade Óglaigh na hÉıreann. The dolmen was first erected in Ireland about 3000 BC. It is believed that they were erected to honour an esteemed chieftain or warrior. Tógadh an leacht cuımhneacháın ın ónóır agus ı gcuımhne ar Chéad Chathlán Bhrıogáıd Dhoıre Óglaıgh na hÉıreann. Tugtar ómós do mhısneach agus d’ıobaırt na nóglach a thug a raıbh acu ar son saoırse na hÉıreann. [Homage is paid to the courage and sacrifice of the volunteers who gave all they had for Irish freedom.] Ní dhéan[m]ar dearmad ar a gcrógacht agus ar a n’íobaırt agus beıdh bunú na poblachta a n-o[ı]dhreacht. [We will not forget their bravery and sacrifice and the foundation of the republic will be their legacy.]
Bogside Republican Youth graffiti at the top of Durrow Park. “Azimcar” and “Quincy” are British Army sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey killed in an attack on Massereene Barracks in March 2009 by the Real IRA.
These graffiti and small boards are on the fence around Dove Gardens as it is rebuilt. “God bless the Loughgall martyrs” and “Óglaıgh Na hÉıreann” and “IRA rule” aim to establish the CIRA and RIRA as simply the IRA. For “Free Colin Duffy” see Freedom Is A State Of Mind.
