Absent Friends

The Tullycarnet Flute Band mural on the electrical sub-station in Lochinver Drive, Tullycarnet, as been repainted/touched up (compare to 2013).

The plaques read: “In memory of Steven Dawson (Big Penny). Gone but not forgotten. A light shone in the night”, and “In memory of Joseph Baxter Corry (Joe). Gone but not forgotten. You’ll always be in our hearts. Farewell our absent friend.”

Pride Of Ballybeen

The Pride Of Ballybeen is a flute band formed in 2014. Their band mural features the Union Flag and Ulster Banner flanking the red hand of Ulster on a six-pointed star against an orange field, surrounded by a crown and a garland pinned by a rose; the titular banner, below, is supported by shamrock and thistle.

King Billy’s On The Fence

Cut-out boards in the shapes of the red hand of Ulster (both left and right hands!), the five-pointed orange star (usually purple) of the Williamites, the crown of the British monarch, and King Billy on his steed line the fence along Bute Park in Ballybeen, Dundonald.

Also included are images of the nearby bonfire on Davarr Avenue, festooned with election posters for Martina Anderson, Nuala Toman, and (from Alliance) Anna Lo.

Absent Friends

“In memory of our fallen comrades Hugh McVeigh, Andy Craig, Brian (Barney) O’Raw, 3rd battalion Ballybeen. ‘Gone but not forgotten’ Quis separabit.”

Banff Walk/Drumadoon Drive, Ballybeen, Dundonald

“Absent Friends:

The time has come to say goodnight
for every road must end,
to the ones who care and they’re always there
our very special friends.

And when it’s time for us to go
and our long journey ends,
you’ll never be alone you see
you’ll be with absent friends

Let’s raise a glass to absent friends
for every road must end,
You’ll always be there in our hearts
our special absent friends”

“Sadly missed along life’s way/Quietly missed every day,/No longer in our life to share/but in our hearts, you’re always there”

“Resting where no shadows fall/In peaceful sleep they await us all,/friends will link the broken chain/When one by one we meet again.”

Ballybeen Remembers

The “UVF” on the storage units would be painted over, leaving only the memorial to the 36th (Ulster) Division. The Ballybeen RHC memorial mural on the side would remain until the building was redeveloped and both murals were replaced by a memorial garden.

Proud Men

“Where so ever, how so ever or whenever we are called upon to make our exit, we shall do so as proud men.” (Another UVF mural in east Belfast has “as free men”.) A hooded gunman from the Red Hand Commando stands at the ready. The first of the four crests is the (rare, possibly restricted to the Morven Park murals) “RHC Youth”; then PAF, UVF, and YCV.
